I am looking to order a custom EPS/Epoxy and trying to iron out what type of EPS blank to order and the glassing schedule. I am thinking of getting 2# Marko EPS blank and glassing it 6oz/4oz Top and 6oz Bottom, all S glass. I am pretty tough on the decks of my boards. And I want it to last for a while. It will be a 5’11 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 groveler.
I’ve heard good things about the Marko EPS blanks but not about any others. Also what are people thoughts on the limits of glassing too heavy and flexibility. I actually had an EPS board custom made with 4oz/4oz top + 3/4 deck patch and a 4oz/4oz bottom. I do think it may have inhibited the flexibility a bit but honestly I don’t think its that noticeable.
I think Marko also has a 2.2 which will be even more resilient on the deck.
6x4 and 6 is pretty good.
If you want more flex, go thinner/flatter…and/or consider stringerless with a bit more glass…it will get you the toughness you seek and be lively!
Depending on where you are located, it may be difficult to find good surfboard EPS other than Marko, White Hot is also high quality…in California you can also get great foam from Segway Composites/American Blanks.
I'd say check with the shaper. There is a lot of crap out there. Segway has tight foam. Marko is good too. But if you're looking for a real custom board / rocker then Segway is the answer. He has tons of rockers in lots of sizes., you can even custom order something if it doesn't exist... Marko and most of the other EPS'ers only have a hand full.
Check out this shape. This is a 7'10" speed egg out of 1.5 Segway foam, with a veneer skin. Trust me the other guys don't have this rocker in EPS.
