Anyone have insight for glassing schedules on 1.5lb EPS for flat water/open water boards? I’m using RR Kwik Kick.
I’d like to use some of my reg. e-glass at 4 & 6oz for recreational boards & tests on hybrid shapes. I have 4oz S2 fabric, some 5.7 carbon and some aeromat for the deck I’ll do prepreg wet layups over. I was thinking for an all carbon race layup running 2 layers of carbon on the deck (w/the mat) & bow + fin box around tail and one layer 6 oz carbon on the bottom. – Or more on the bottom for these boards?
curious about glass fabrics on these boards w/1.5 EPS-- 12-6’, 14’. Thinking about a prone board too. Anyone knows what’s overkill, just the right amount, etc?
I've only shaped and glassed 6 flat water SUP's now so no expert here. All were 1.5lb. Out of those 6 boards, the first 2 were glassed with double 6oz. deck and double 6oz. bottom. The rest were glassed the same but I added a extra layer of 4oz. to the deck. The reason for the extra layer to the deck was because of big dents being made from people starting out on their knees. The double 6 just wasn't enough for 1.5lb. with people on their knees. Segway composites recommends 2x 4oz. + 6oz. patch for deck nad 6oz.+4oz for the bottom using the 1.5lb. I went with the double 6oz. + 4oz. due to not being able to get wide enough 4oz. for a 32" wide board. After adding the 4oz. layer to the deck there were no more dents being made. In my opinion, if you already know how to SUP on you feet, the double 6oz. is good. As for the prone board you more than likely will be on your knees alot so maybe a third layer patch in that area for extra support if you're going with the 1.5lb density. I don't have experience with carbon fiber so no input on that. Again my thoughts are strictly from my experiences. Thought I'd give you my input on the problem I had with only using 2 layers of cloth on deck.
All SUPs here (by me and those being done by the local factory) are double 4oz S bottom and double 4oz S decks with 5.7oz carbon deck patch hidden by the deck pad. These are 1.5 lb. The deck will be solid and have no heel dents with this layup. No need for any sandwich.
On 14 footers, you’ll get nose vibration in chop without going full carbon, or at least carbon tape down the center.
