I just finished my first resin tint, on my fourth shape, and second glass job. This is the first board that I have made where I designed the template, and didn’t copy someone else’s design. The goal was to modify a Speed Dialer type board that surfs more vertical, and works better in beach break surf.
It is 5’10"x20"x2.75" double bump, round tail with chines, belly to single concave to double concave to vee out the back. It is an Ice9 blank, glassed with single 6 oz. cloth on the bottom and deck. I plan on putting 4 Probox plugs on the rails (like a speed dialer), and a 8.5" box in the center, for maximum fin variability and experimentation. Thanks Larry!
I have hotcoated the deck and luckily I remembered that I need to reinforce the fin area.
Questions:
-
Should I just do a butterfly patch on the tail, or should I only reinforce the areas where the fin boxes should be?
-
Should I have reinforced the area during the lamination with the butterfly patch under the bottom lam?
-
How should I make a jig for the center fin box?
-
Any advice/opinions on fin placement?
Poly resin?
If it was my project and I was at the stage you are at I would go ahead and hot coat the bottom. Next I would install the Proboxes and center box. Then I would sand down the boxes and out about 4 inches past where my tail patch is going to be. I would then “CAP” the boxes with 4 oz cloth… And then blend the patch and hot coat to cover the sanded area and then power sand the whole bottom…
Or…you could add a tail patch now ,before hot coating…The Probox system is designed to be installed after hotcoat so you don’t really need to “cap” the boxes.
For me… working out of the backyard…getting a board to the hot coat stage is very important. Once it’s hot coated it can sit around and cure until I have time to work on it. A board that has been Laminated but not hot coated is asking for
problems

Stingray,
Thanks for the advice. I have thought about capping the probox plugs but I don’t understand how I would tape off the hole where the insert goes, as it is a funky shape.
Is there a difference between putting the tail patch on after the lamination (and before the hotcoat), and putting the tail patch on during the lamination?
My advice is… (and you can take or leave it)
Put on a butterfly tail/fin patch
all the way to the rails but dont wrap it around the rails
zip cut it at the rail with a razor when gelled
then hot coat the bottom and rail
clean easy and simple
and youve got all fin box area’s ready
plus you can get a nice hard edge in the tail rail area
heres what I mean
you can put em under the full sheet or add them after
Thanks for the photo Ken…I just did one like that…I like the way you have a little tab going down the butt crack. Good idea.
Hey Obproud ,if you have not hotcoated yet you can add a tail patch over your lam resin.
Hopefully we are not confusing you…
I started caping center fin boxes because I get lots of repair jobs with center fin boxes that are cracking and taking on water. I also have made many mistakes while installing boxes. Over sanding around the box or getting wild with the router. Bumping the board against the wall ,ect. As long as I’m in there fixing things I started adding reinforcement.
Take your time the board will come out nice.
