Reduce, Reuse, Re-Shape?

Hows it everyone?

I have searched extensively and got some good ideas, and I am continuing to search, but I figured i would throw out a forum topic in case anyone wanted to drop 2 cents or so my way.

I found an old beat up longboard. Not TOO beat up. Its got open wounds etc, but was kept very dry. Most of the damage is in the front foot of the board. You see where I’m going with this. I wanna chop it into something cool. I have a few shortboards and one really good longbaord. Between a semi gun (7’) and my 9’0" I have nothing. I had an 8’0 egg that was my friends that I liked a lot, but would have preffered 7’0 or 7’6. So… What should I chop this down to?

Right away I thought mini simmons, but theres nowhere near enough volume in the tail (Dims below).and the bottom contours wrong.

An 8’0 would be ok. 7’0 would be real cool, but maybe ugly. A 6’6" Takayama scorpion copy would be awesome, but I dont know, the way this board is set up it may not even be close. The scorpions have pulled in tails, but not as pulled in as this. Its got one fin box and I dont think I want to add any more. The glassings ok in the tail… And I prefer futures, so I cant just drop fcs plugs in…

This board has a TON of nose rocker. I know theres a standard way to measure etc… but what i did was put it on the floor and measure the nose to the floor and it was at or over 5 1/2 inches. its got decent tail rocker too. If I chopped it down I would still ahve some rocker left. I could shape some in too…

The bottom seems to be a big single concave through the first 2 and half feet of board to the 7’ mark, then a pretty serious vee through the fin with a flat exit and asquare tail.

The rails are pretty damned soft and full too. Weird combo no? HP LB Rocker with soft rails and heavy vee? Im not sure if it spirals either… Theres some extra glass there that needs to be removed to see the proper concave.

Heres the dims…

from the tail

1" in 5 1/2 wide

2" in 7" wide

4" in 9 in wide

6" in 10 1/2 in wide

1 Foot x 14

2x18 1/2

3x 21

4 x 22 1/2

5 x 23 1/2

6 x 23

7 x 22 1/2

8 x 20

everything after that is irrelevant. So… I had an old jacobs 6’8 egg with heavy vee that was a blast to ride… wider round pin than this though… What can i do with this? I’m not looking to push it through big heavy barrels. I would like to be able to take it out to my favorite LB spot when its chest high and just cruise single fin style, but throw some turns too, maybe duck into tiny barells. I’m in HAwaii but this would be fr town, Lani’ other unnamed chill spots. NOT off the wall, rockpiles etc.

Any and all help is appreciated. I have a .brd file of it I can email if you have aku or boardcad and want to play with it.

MAhalo

I like eggs.  I'm re-building a couple right now, until I get some scratch to build a new board...from scratch!  I'll vote egg.  Check out Reverb's boards.  Also I think Sharkcountry has a pretty impressive egg collection, with bamboo veneers, or something like that.  Check the archives.  Hard part is getting the glass off, very carefully.  Might have some spackling there, eh?  Post up some pics brah.

It’s got some spackle yup. Not a ton though… Heres the background. Or what I think. IT was a normal glassed board, but looks like someone sprayed some urethane over it. Thick. Like a mm or two. Or some sort of plastic coating. Possibly to turn it into a waikiki rental or some siht? I have no idea. There are swirl marks from the previous owner. Looks like he started grinding/sanding it off and then left town. I saw it on the street and snagged it.

Who throws a surfboard out? Not me. Im enviro guy too. No foam… Especially here. The landfills are full already. Do you guys in Cali want our garbage? Didnt think so…

So I’m gonna reshape… Dammit. I’m gonna dig this thing out now for pics… When you guys see pics you’re gonna sayThrow it out. But I’m not going to. If I get one good wave on it its worth it. Besides I didnt get into the summer classes I wanted and Cant start any jobs till August, so I’ve got time. And of course no $$$.

First pic is the raw foam on the nose… Its gonna come off…  two is the weird grey stuff, three is the tail rocker, four is the nose rocker, 5 is the tail obviously and six is an overall. Those white spots you see are expert repairs. Seriously. No sarcasm. Theyre fine… Except the big one on the nose. Thats raw exposed foam. You can see the grey stuff in one pic too. Weird. You can pick it off wth your fingernails almost… Im going to chisel it off…

Don’t let your ladies see that handsome dude in the mirror either, and dont even think of looking at the boards on the rack… Keep your eyes on the ishtty one… lol.

God dammit. It took me like 20 minutes to take the pics shrink em and upload em and theyre gone… WTF? Ill do it again.

Ah, my brother from a different mother!

As far as the waste - Yes we will take it, some anyway.  Send your broken and homeless boards to me.  Any old scraps of koa wood, also.

No pics showed up, so I guess its OK to let my lady see the screen.  But unless you look like Daniel Craig in the Casino Royale torture scene, I don't think she'll pay much attention anyway.  She did pay quite a bit of attention to that particular scene, however, LOL.

Pics are up now.

Jaevee, lots of rocker like you said. Looks like you could do lots with that board.

Thanks, thats what I thought… Im actually thinking about taking some foam off of both sides now… But I didnt want to admit it cuz the swaylockians will start to shout “just buy a blank already”. lol. And theyre right… I think I’ll leave the tail alone and just go down to 7’6. I’ll be able to ride it in crap and it shouldnt be too much trouble. Now to get a place to do it… I think I have one lined up… I may have to rent space though…

THis is what I’ve gotten it to now. One more day with sandpaper getting the lumps out and it’ll be ready for glass.
