Regarding Safety

After reading the recent thread on epoxy and safety I had some thoughts about safety.

This is not to start some kind of which is safer, epoxy is, or isn’t…kind of discussion. I just had the idea that maybe a sticky thread detailing the various precautions that should be taken when doing the various tasks that we do that bring us into contact with substances harmful to our health.

Maybe something along the lines of:

SHAPING

-hearing protection

-safety glasses

-dust mask …any particular quality??

EPOXY

-longsleeves

-gloves (latex or nitrile… what is best?)

-ventilation

-respirator (Amine cartridge {according to e-mail exchange with GL} … what is everyone using? What is the best specific one? Where can you get them?)

  • NO solvents, other than the additive F or DNA added to the mix

-??? (any to add)

POLY

-longsleeves

-gloves (what kind are compatible with poly resin?) …I only mention these and longsleeves with poly cause I have read/talked about guys just getting it on themselves an then just ‘washing’ it off with acetone. (does not seem like the safest thing to me)

-respirator (simply a VOC cartridge you can get at any hardware store?)

-??? any to add?

SANDING

-gloves?

-hearing protection

-glasses

-respirator (what kind of filter is best suited for the particles given off by sanding??)

Was just thinking that with some of the discussion that was going on(and has before…), what ARE the steps that we each should be taking to protect ourselves? Rather than talking about rumors and speculation about what could or couldn’t be bad with a certain product, we could have something positive and proactive, that newbies could refer to.

Anyway. Just a thought, that maybe the rest of us as well as some moderators could also think about.

I use a particulate respirator for shaping as well. Your lungs are worth more than the $15-$25 you’ll save buying a dust mask instead of a respirator…

Oh, and shave before wearing the respirator, or the seal will not be as good, letting in what you are wearing the repirator to keep out…

3M 6001 organic vapor cartridges with p95 particulate filters with a well fitting face mask. I’ve tried a few different brands and 3M by far is the best.

I just inherited a 3M full face shield. I just need to get a new head strap.

You should always have some acetone around or DNA in case you get resin in your eyes. A shower or hose near by would be very handy too.

Long sleeves don’t work for me because the resin just soaks through anyway. If you really need to cover up a tyvek (spelling?) suit would do it.

Shoes for obvious reasons.

Matches, lighters, cigarettes and weed should not be anywhere near your chemicals.
