reglassing a velzy

I am new to this site, but I just got a 9’6 Velzy longboard. I wanted to learn how to glass so I was looking for a board that was old and beat up, when one of my friends saw this board he got super excited and told me that it was fairly valuable to ask for advice on the best way to bring this board back to its former glory. The board has had a good amount of water damage but hasn’t been in the water in about 2 years so its fairly dry. the fin is also broken off and I am not sure that it is original to the board. The guy I bought it from says the board was shaped in 1968 but I haven’t found anything on the board yet to prove the accuracy of that. I was thinking about sanding it down and reglassing it, but now that it is supposedly a fairly rare board I am a little worried about trying to do it on my own. Please tell me what you think about restoring the board and whether or not it really is as valuable as my friends say it is. I am going to try and upload some photos of it after I resize them. Thanks for the help!

Photos will be absolutly necessary for any meaningful comment to be made. Looking forward to seeing the board…

Bill-

I’m in the same boat. I recently purchased a Gordie that has had some nose/side dammage. After showing it to a few friends, it looks like the resin tint is original. After hearing that, I’d love to keep the original and have the repairs made to blend. Do you think this is possible? Would it be more valuable in the long run (not even thinking about reselling this one) to make the repairs or to have someone take it down and retint? Do you know anone that is skilled in these repairs? Cost? I love the board, even with the shortened nose. Any info mucho appreciated! Woodie

Bill-

I had a few problems posting photos to the reply, but I started a new resource with a few picts. Take a look and shoot me your thoughts. Thanks a million!!

Woodie

Yeah, I was wanna see a pic too.

here are two pictures, I am sorry that they are so small, I am having trouble resizing the photos to fit. I think I am going to just post a link so that I can upload the originals, until then, please any feedback and suggestions would be great

here is the link to the site that I posted all the pictures on, they are under the the folder velzy surfboard. hope these are good enough to see the damage to the board.

I don’t know what the problem is, but in trying to view the larg versions, I got this:

"Sorry, an error has occurred, and the page you were trying to go to is temporarily unavailable.

Please click the ‘Back’ button to return to the page you were on before"

Anyway, I was able to see the logo, and that’s all I need. What you have is a Velzy popout in very bad condition. Go ahead and use it as a blank to make a new board. It is not valuable, at all. In it’s current condition, it’s junk. I’d wager that when you get the glass off, you’ll find it doesn’t even have a real stringer. Just a wood strip routed into the deck. So, you might want to devise a way to cut it, and install a stringer.

Oh, and the board is older than 1968. More like '65.

…83,

TonyM has nailed it perfectly, right down to the stringer most likely being routed in. '65 sounds correct to me also.

Woodie,

Steer me to the photos.

upload them to photobucket

Woody,

Check your PM’s. There is a response there for you.

Any chance that you could make that advice public since I’m in a similar situation with a Hobie.

Now, check YOUR PM’s.
