Its been quite some time since I have posted here. Thanks to this website and the wealth of information, I have started a small shaping business and have had it for a couple years now.
But I have a situation with one of my boards.
Just to create the setting, my sanded finish boards are finished with 320 and sealed with a waterbased clear coat called “Polycrylic” satin finish. I took this reccomendation from Greg Loehr. Then I will wet sand with 400, 600. The finish to my belief looks great.
However, one of my customers DID NOT want a sanded finish, but a gloss finish. My question is, is it possible to lay Reichold gloss OVER the sprayed finish? If not, are there any other methods to fix this? Any help is very appreciated.
…hello, that s very simple: seems that you have a sanded hot coat there; is right? well, in this case if you add another resin coat both sides, the board could be too heavy; so, you need to sand it down like if you are doing a gloss in the first time.
All the different finishes (sanded h coat, speed finish, sanded gloss, gloss) uses different sanding approaches.
As Barry Snyder is saying, you should sand off. Start with a 60 grit and a medium power pad, then 100 grit to smooth out all; rails very light only with 100 and a softer pad then by hand.
Then apply the gloss and follow the polish and rub out steps.
The styrene in the gloss resin will attack the polycrilic like there’s no tomorrow. You gotta sand every bit off. Fortunately, that stuff’s not particularly tough to remove.
Yes sand off the Acrylic finish. 180 or 220 will take it right off. Hand sand or sander and pad. Sands off easy. Don’t take 60 or 100 and a power sander to it. You will just create scratches, burn-thrus. Once you’ve got it all off; go thru the necessary grits in preparation of gloss coat. Them Reichold it.
…I suggested 60 grit because that s the grit that all use when sand heavy glassed boards to prepare for the gloss and wants the right weight. He needs to get rid of almost all the unwanted weight; then 100 to smouth out all.
With light glassed boards you start with 100 for a gloss coat.
Of course you can take that finish with 180 grit but then if you apply a gloss coat that HP would turn in a dog due to to much unwanted weight and a not lively board.
I have glossed with reichold over acrylic before. I taped of panels on the hoatcoat and did color work with acrylic paint. I let it dry for 24 hours and lightly sprayed a coat of clear acrylic (just plain old stuff from Home depot). I pulled the tape around panels and let dry for another 24 hours.(I did the resin pinline before taping off for the color)
I scuffed the panel with red scotchbrite and glossed the board as normal. As the resin started to go off it did this scary dimpling thing but it layed down in the end. They gloss over acrylic pinlines all the time.
I still think you are safer sanding off the acrylic like the other Guys said… I just wanted to share my story. I will post a pic if I can find one.
I was under the impression the board had already been sanded (hot coat) with a clear coat. You don"t want to take a board that’s already been sanded to 220 or 400 and and then resand it wiith coarser grits.
Zep high traffic/high gloss floor finish, over the polycrylic…a couple coats with a sponge…then polish it out with lemon pledge…by the naked eye…you can’t tell the difference.
I’ve had some luck taking boards to an auto-body place and having them sprayed with a two part clear coat. It fills in all the scratches and shines up really nicely. Maybe get a quote from a local shop and let the customer know how much more it’s gonna cost?
