Sorry, this isn’t a design question, but does anyone have any advice for a place to rent a decent longboard on Maui. Seems you have to go underground these days, as the surf shops now seem only to rent junkers. Perhaps a local shaper who might have a spare to rent? Thanks for any help.
I rented a decent longboard from Boss Frog’s in Lahaina. It was a foam and fiberglass board and was in decent shape. I don’t know who the shaper was but it was made by “The Realm”.
Hope that helps.
maybe you can cut out the middleman, just go to Costco on Maui and buy one of those Realm boards, then return it after you’re done with it, or have snapped it in two.
I rented one in Lahaina from another shop. It was a good board and I got to surf small but fun Maalea(sp) all alone! I’m through traveling with a longboard. You should be able to find a board that fits your needs.

I was on Maui Dec. 2003 and got a great rental deal at Second Wind surf shop. I think it was just under a hundred dollars for a week. Great selection of all shapes and lengths of boards: primo fiberglass, most of them new boards. They throw in the roof rack as part of the the rental deal and you can swap the board for another style if it isn’t working for you. Good shop.
Call Ron at 808-250-4872. He has a mobile surfboard rental business. He will come to your condo or hotel with his van full of boards. I rented a longboard for a couple days and when the swell came up, I swapped it for a shorter, narrower board. His boards were in better condition than what I saw at the rental shops in Lahaina. Pretty reasonable, I think $50 for 3 days.
Better yet buy the longboard from Costco at the end of your vacation donate it to the Paia Youth & Culture Center. You help the kids on the north shore and get yourself a tax deduction in the process.
Go see Lenny at Hawaiian Island surf and sport. On the way out of the airport on Dairy road, across the street from K-Mart and Costco. He has boards by local shapers ,epoxys and sailboards. Has racks for your rental car too.Pretty convenient. Tommy Castleton @ Maui Waveriders in Kihei across from Kalama park has a bunch of nice new surftechs for rent. Ask him to show him to show his portfolio. He made the cover of surfer back in the seventies. Lowel
