rent or bring to oahu?

hey guys im headed to oahu next week (sun-thurs) and was planning on doing some surfing, im staying on diamond head, good waves this time of year?. I am also planing on going atleast once to the north shore if it is small enough. i was wondering if there were any rental shops that carried higher end shortboard/performance fish boards? or should i just bring my own? airfare is a bitch these days ha (100$) one way and i plan on getting inked up over there aswell and would love to have enough cash to do it right instead of only getting an outline because of having to spend 200 on airfare! also any spots that are completely off limits to tourist? do’s and donts of oahu? im a decent surfer definitly not pro but can hold my own on decent sized slabs (cutbacks, roundhouse, airs every now and then etc…) if that helps any!

thanks alot!

Aloha Richard,

Howzit… since you’re staying near Diamond Head area… there are a few places where you can rent boards… hawaiian watersports in nearby and a few other nearby.they are all on kapahulu ave…  no need to spend over $150-200 for luggage fee.

I surf diamond head lots and people are very friendly…breaks: Cliffs, Kaiko, and Lighthouse…  they are all mellow. been decent the past few days…

See you in the water.

You’ll only be there for a few days, but another option is to pick up a board off craigslist (there are hundreds daily) for a couple hundred bucks, then sell it before you head home.  Might be too much for the short time you’ll be there but just an idea.  Also, there’s a few parks east of the diamond head area on Kalanianaole Ave, Wailupe beach park and Kawaikui beach park.   Like waikiki it’s a long paddle, but usually not too crowded.

Not worth the hassle and $ these days to bring boards if just going for a week…and rental board selection can be limited…consider running thru Craiglist before you get there, plenty of rideable boards usually available for $200 - $250, set-up the purchase for as soon as you get there…time to come home, swing by the bigger surf shops and probably sell it to them for half of what you paid…has worked for me in the past…

As called out by KJ, Cliffs area is a pretty mellow hang, waves can be fun …North Shore will still have plenty of waves, with crowds on the downswing…

If you don't mind riding Surftechs, they rent boards for $20 a day.  If I'm not mistaken, if you pick it up when they open, you don't have to return it till closing the next day.  They're located on Queen St. near Ward Ave. just outside of Waikiki.  808-596-8693.
