Repair Question

Have an eleven foot log that is about 6 years old. There are some small fractures on the bottom (5 or so), which appear to be letting some water in. My question concerns the proper fix for such a problem. Should fractures of this sort and number be spot-fixed or should a more overall approach be used, and if the latter is preferred, what should I request from my local shop. Thanks.

It wouldnt matter if you are having the local shop fix it. I would imagine to do it spot by spot i its several small dings. You shouldnt need to strip glass and redo it unless its letting in an enormous amount of water.

your shop should be able to access the situation and find out what’s best for you.

Wayull…that’s sorta like saying I have a cut, should I see a doctor?? Are these small cracks, holes that go through to the foam, what? Gotta have more information before answering or it’s definitely gonna be the wrong answer.

In any event, let it dry out before you start attacking the problem and under no circumstances do anything crazy like trying to rip off the bottom glass and redo it all.

I assume that these are cracks in the hot coat and not thru the cloth or foam. Grind them down until you see the weave of the cloth using a dremel tool with the small sanding drum (about 3/8 dia, hold it on edge). You should now have some 3/8" wide grooves where the cracks were. Sand the general area with 100 grit. Level the board at the cracks if possible. Fill the grooves with clear sanding resin; overfill a bit. Power sand down the fills until back at the original level. Cover with 4 oz. cloth, clear laminate, hot coat, gloss if you want. Finish sand to 400 grit, polish. If you grind into the cloth (especially if it has a colored laminate) the repairs will be very visible. If the board is clear and the glass is yellowed, you’ll see the fills. In any case, it won’t be leaking anymore.

Spot fixes appear to be the order of the day. Thanks for your input.

Will remember to include more information in next thread. Rest assured the wound is dry and I have decided against major surgery. Thanks for your input.
