My sister is lookin to get some repairs done to her board, she’s trying to talk me into doing it, i’ve done a few patches here and there before, but never dealt with cracks that have run. Any tips/suggestions? Its a great board (7’0 channel islands flyer 2, but about 3 inches thick x 21 and change) but has seen better days
Hate to ask, since you already took lots of pics, but any chance you could step back and take a shot showing the whole board, deck side, and the whole board, bottom side?
Its seen better days, but looks like its still got some life in it. I'm guessing you just want to get it watertight and passable, nothing fancy, right?
First of all, this is just a suggestion, but I'd clean the wax off real good before taking tips/suggestions photos, because the wax kinda obscures the extent of the damage, plus that way it looks like you're really seriously going to do some repair work.
I would just clean it up, sand all the dinged areas (round the nose a bit) and glass over them. Sand and feather the repair, and put a couple more coats of resin, with sanding / feathering in between. Like everysurfer said, microballoons for filler would be a good idea to fill the deeper divots, but the stand-back shot makes it look like they're not too big, so you could just fill them with resin and chopped glass if you want.
I'd cut a band of glass and glass over the cracked area, then just feather it as best you can. Its always gonna look like a band-aid, but I don't think your sister is gonna care too much, judging by the look of the board.
There's more you could do if you really wanted to get into it, but hey its for your sister, so you know you're not gonna get paid for it hahaha.
I normally would have cleaned it up but she just swung by for a couple mins while I was in the middle of working on 3 other boards.
Thanks for the info thats a big help! Just a thought, I have whole buch of foam cutoffs from the surfboard I’ve reshaped into a kite-specific surfboard, grinding up that and using that as a filler would work well no? (I saved it all since I figured I’d find a better use for it than the dump)
I’m not sure what her intentions are with it, dont think she’s used it in a few years, she had previously mentioned selling it for $300-400 (dont think that’s in the books) so that may be her plan, not sure if its something I want to tackle since it will be my fault if it doesnt look perfect anymore
I do imagine she expects me to do it for free, because I used the board once 5 years ago, so obviously I contributed to all of the damage, and I like making stuff to see how it rides, so patching a dirty old board is exactly the same
That's pretty funny right there, we have all been there my friend, nothing like walking into a minefield, eh? Family is family, you gotta love 'em. I don't think the foam dust filler is such a great idea, I've never heard it recommended, anyway.
I wasn't trying to bust your chops about the dirty wax, just its easier to see what you have when its cleaned up, and that's probably why McDing didn't really take you serious (or maybe he's just funnin' with ya), just saying. But yeah, if she just dropped it off, then there you are. Tell her next time she wants a board repaired she has to clean it before she brings it to you!
Maybe you could have her post up a thread here with the title Is This Board A Valuable Collectible? She'll get set straight on the value of the board in a New York minute, and you won't have to be the messenger that gets shot for delivering the bad news. Have fun. =)
Yeah I agree with Paul. Fill 'em with some Zog's Sex Wax.

When someone wants me to work on a basket case the first thing I say is strip the wax and then call me. If they really want it fixed they will strip the wax or offer to pay me to strip the wax.
One year ago a really good friend showed up for a camping trip at San Onofre, California. The center box on his long board was so bad I could move it back and forth by grabbing the fin. I glassed that board , I offered to fix it for free if he would strip the wax...board is still F'ed up one year later............Your sis's board has been sitting for a long time
