Reshape your first board?

Do you guys get emotionally attached to your first board? I shaped a 9’4" longboard for my first shape. It’s been sitting on my board rack collecting dust for a while. I really want to shape a mini simmons and I think my #001 would produce a great Simmons. Is it bad mojo to reshape your first board?

My wife thinks it’s in really poor taste. It was the first longboard she surfed. I guess she is a little attached.

I on the other hand have no emaotional attachmetn to it. Or at least I say I dont.

What do you think?

blanks are cheap

Blanks are cheap

Wives are not cheap

First shapes are not replacable

I’ve reshaped boards before… it’s really not worth the hassle - you don’t usually end up with the amount of foam you need due to the mess created by stripping of the fibreglass. Keep the original, keep the wife, buy a new blank for the simmons… or better still get some balsa and go all out with a simmons slot

Reshaping a surfboard after it’s been glassed is the most (ass-a-nine) thing one can do. Unless you do feel your time is not important? Please don’t do it. Plus PU losses it’s life after time. Buy a blank that is well suited for your project. What’s with all the Simmons Models of late? Do you really think they are worth the effort? Let’s build a model “T”!

Take care more of your wife and less of your Hobby.

Get your priorities straight!

My reply is a bit harsh I know however it is painful to hear someone thinking of tearing up there first surfboard. I sold mine and have many regrets years latter.

Alright! Alright! I’ll leave the board alone. Man you guys are a sentimental bunch. My wife will be happy that she is getting backed up by a bunch of guys she doesnt even know. Guess I’ll build a blank for my Simmons. I’m actually going to build a midi Simmons. I have read some posts and seen some footage and they look really fun.

I’m not a standard thruster type guy, too big for that. So, I have to think outside the box for alternate waveriding vehicles. Since this is my thread I’ll hijack it and ask what you guys would build for a BIG (6’1" 265lb ex college football player) surfer in Florida that will go in summer surf. I already have the logs, funshapes and big boy thrusters. I thought the Midi Simmons say 6’10" 19" nose, 24"wide, pretty flat rocker, would be well suited for that application. I just want something different. I’ve already got plans for a 10’8" noserider to add to my other longboards.

I want to surf something different!

Surf Ding…Classic!!

My thoughts exactly, Hey why not shape a 6’ x 12" x 1/2" Alaliana thing? Maybe go steal a few fence slats from the neighbors yard, bust out the jig saw, belt sander, and put down a few layers of bees wax. Now your surfing with soul. I really like it when they put the leash cup in the wood plank too.

I surf with a couple of guys you size some are bigger guys like 6’10", and some are over 300 lbs…I mean real cows! Not knowing how well you surf, or how good of a paddler you are, or your age, fitness, gut& glory aspect to your personality, etc, etc. it’s hard to make a judgement call on what you should be surfing? With that said, if you are surfing crappy little Florida mushy waves, and you are a giant of a guy…then you should be able to surf that longboard like a short board? I’d recommend a 9 ft high performance trifin long board. Something like 9 x 23 x 2 5/8-2 3/4. Then when it gets a bit bigger you can surf the same board with confidence too.

Or you can move to some place where giants can all live in harmony and surf small surfboard…like Indo or Hawaii.

And if you reshape your first board…your penis will fall off. It’s a fact.

Model T 2008 Concept.

Blah, it’s still got 4 wheels.

Resinhead,

I am a strong paddler. I have been surfing since I was 13. I am no pro or local legend by any means but I surf OK. I have a 9’3" with plenty of rocker and sidebites that I can “throw around”. I am not into the Alaias just yet. I want something other than my BB thruster or egg that I can surf when the surf has got enough push that I dont “need” the logs.

It would be so much easier if I wasnt trying to figure out a board to work where there is no surf.

You guys are great! And I DEFINATELY WANT TO KEEP MY PENIS ATTACHED!!!

Save yourself the work and buy another blank! I’m “stepping down” from my longboard and going the Simmons way as well. My first board in this vein will be a 7’8" x 22" x 17" nose x 16" tail. After that I will be looking towards a 6’10" as I am a similar weight to you. I was thinking of 23" wide, 18" in the nose and 17" in the tail. 7’8" will have 2 3/4" rocker in the nose and 1 3/4" rocker in the tail. Rocker for the 6’10" will be even lower no doubt but yet to decide exactly how much less.
