hey guys. i’ve been on here for a few months and i know how much some of you hate when people post questions that are easy to answer but… I am still really confused about glassing procedures, what to order as far as supplies and resin stuff (like catalyst, hardner…) i really dont get it… I have searched through here for a while and i am still confused and i just need some help. so if you could explain to me what i need to get and what purpose each thing serves that’d be great and much appreciated. Also, can you give me the procedure for glassing? i really want my first board to be a glossy finish like in the surfshops or like the WRV boards like how they’re not rough but not glossy. so if you could help me out and unconfuse me i’d really appreciate it. thanks guys, Cam
Try speaking to your local supplier. Or buy Glassing 101. Also catalyst is hardener. And what sort of board is it?
i had planned on it being a retro fish but i dont even know what it is b/c i messed up the tail…
heres a pic of it… its from a bit ago but it looks the same just a bit more cleaned up.
From the looks of it your board is polystyrene in which case you definitely do not want to be using polyester resin, unless you want your shaping work to be dissolved. Literally. So epoxy if that is the case. And if you are going to be using epoxy, get some digital scales. Preferably accurate to a tenth of a gram, or ounce or whatever you are using. You need to be quite accurate when measuring the appropriate amount of hardener and resin when it comes to epoxy, or you could render your shape pretty much useless. Also, do not get acetone anywhere near your foam if it is polystyrene. Acetone eats polystyrene for breakfast. Even more than polyester does.
yeah its eps insulation… can you give me examples of epoxy and all the stuff i need to get? sorry about this, i am just really confused and i guess clueless as to what i need to do and buy… thanks a bunch though
I guess that depends on your location. If you are in the US you could just jet Resin Research from Fiberglass supply, or another similar supplier. It would probably help to post your location.

I just ordered the fish glassing kit from Greenlight. Comes with the RR epoxy with measured pumps so you don’t have to weight anything, instruction videos, bamboo glass (more on that in a minute), and all f the other accoutrement you would need (gloves, brushes, squeegee, etc). Now for the bamboo cloth. It is probably not as easy to work with as fiberglass but I kind like the idea of using an alternative technology. It does however make things like cutlaps easy since you lay out your cut lap with double stick tape and stretch the cloth onto it. It is not white however, so your board comes out a sort of light manila folder color. It’s not a bad color though. Stretching the cloth onto my board was probably the hardest part, pain in the ass in the butt crack and pointy parts. Nothing some sanding and some additional epoxy didn’t cure.
why do i need to move the lawnmower?
cause it’s it the shaping room!
oh… well its not b/c i cant shape in my garage cause my parents got mad last time cause i got foam all over the garage and i had to use the compressor to blow it out… so i just shape in my yard now…
Argh…it never changes.Back in 1963 my old man raised hell with me and Jim Phillips for dripping resin all over the back porch. We also got busted for dripping resin and leaving a foam dust mountain in the Hickam Air Force Base Hobby Shop. You kids make me proud I tell ya.
