resin artwork question

Just shaped a blnk and put two circumferential black paint pinlines about 1" apart. I’d like to put a bit of color in between the pinlines and have some yellow and blue resin pigment. I was thinking about masking the pinlines and randomly dribbling little lines of colored resin in the gap between the black pin lines, letting it harden and then glassing as usual. Anyone tried this type ting right on foam? Will it be too bumpy and complicate the glassing?

Really appreciate any thoughts.

Mitchell, My first thoughts are that the resin might have a tendency to run under the tape a bit, leaving an uneven line. If it does, you can re-pinline on the hot coat. A test on a scrap of foam would be invaluable. Then you can see what will happen without the risk of starting a fix-it chain reaction that could end up in a huge headache.

It should be fine, people do foam stains all the time. The devil is in the details. how well you sanded the blank, what quality of tape you used, how well you pushed the tape down to the foam, how well you cleaned the foam pre-tape, all that kind of stuff. But if done right it should come out crisp and clean. Kick the resin pretty hot for the foam stain, the longer it sits wet on the foam, the better the chance to seep under the tape and melt the tape adhesive.

thanks guys…came out fine and saved the board from looking lame. Ending up dribbling some purple pigmented resin and black pigmented resin with a popsicle stick between the lines and then decided to use a squeegee and kind of flatten/sweep it out. Sounds horrible i know but actually ended up ok.

Any chance of a pic??

Next time add a couple of drips of white with your blue and purple, it will add a deeper, 3d effect to it.

I am glad it worked out for you though, good job.

i agree, a pic is worth a thousand words. Let’s see.
