just started working with the fcs fusion plugs and I was wondering what methods were used to do pigment work with pre-glass fin plugs. For tints or opaques.
I didn’t find any threads dedicated to this. I only saw mention of pigmenting the resin used to set the plugs in. Before I saw this my first thought was to tape the area around the plugs to keep the foam free of clear resin before the color work. I just tried this out on a board and found it to be very cumbersome and unreliable in my first attempt. I figured I would ask here to see what the experts do.
Are fusions ever done after the glass with color work?
They look better after lamination with a couple of layers of cloth and clear resin. I think black boxes look best with darker colors and white for the lighter colors.
Not sure why one would pigment the resin used to set the plugs. I’ve done it many times, the way I do it is to rout the holes on the lam, install as usual, cover each with a clear 4oz football patch. squeegee the patches flat firmly with yellow spreader and later brush a light baste at the edge of the patch, then hotcoat as usual. I never gloss coat
Thanks for the info and pics. The idea of coloring the resin I believe I saw DEADSHAPER say it would be for pre glass install and to have the box covered with only the tabs shown through. The pic I also got from the post from DEADSHAPER.
ahh yes now I understand. I’ve done that way where just the tab slots show. for opaque pigment job I don’t think you need to pigment the the resin to install the plugs
