resin pin line question

How do you keep the resin from running when you’re adding a pin line on an angled rail?

I did a resin pin line on the ‘blue jimmy’ yesterday and noticed that towards the middle of the board, where the rails are angled, the resin would drain towards the outside (gravity, I know) and leave the inside of the pinline looking a little thin.

Figuring that a gloss resin pinline isn’t quite the same thing as a gloss coat on the deck I messed with it more as it started thickening and was able to flow the resin towards the thinner areas and it seems to have set up fine.

The problem I foresee, however, is that as I do a pinline on the outside of the first one, it’s gonna want to run even more since it’ll be on a steeper part of the sloping deck/rail.

How do you keep it from running and getting too thin on the inside?

The pinlines are 1/8" and I’m masking everything off as per Cleanlines’ example in the Master Glasser DVD.

Thanks,

Santiago

PS. I found that the resin on the board was gelling a little quicker than the resin in the paper cup, is that normal? I know it’s not like that with the lam/hotcoat resin I’ve used before…

yow Jimmy,

i use moulding gelcoat. You can thin it with some resin if you like.

Mr jimmychuck, we have one of the best resin pinliners around who comes in and works for us; he worked with Sam Cody back in the late 60’s-early 70’s. There is a video sequence of him laying a pin on our website:

www.plusonesurf.com Profiles > Larry Crow.

You will need high bandwidth and mediaplayer.

Anyhow, he shoots the pinlines super hot, brushes out fast (less than a minute) and pulls tape instantly after that. I’ve seen him add some HC resin to the mix to make it cling better. Seems like his resin kicks in less than 5 minutes somehow. He colors pinlines, panels, bands, and rails that all roll over the steep sides of boards and never seems to have a problem. Conceivably you can sand off a “practice” pinline and re-do until satisfied. HTH!

Thanks PlusOne. I’ll try adding more MEKP on the next one and see if setting it quicker helps (which I suspect will).

The LC ASF file won’t play on my machine, it tells me an audio codec is missing and it can’t download it directly from Microsoft. XP, MediaPlayer 10, super broadband access (from work). Let me know if you need any other info.

won’t work for me either, but i’m too lazy to go codec-hunting.

I can’t download it either. But it sounds like you are either shooting it too slow or not using Reichold gloss resin. What do you mean by an angled rail? RB

I guess ‘angled’ wasn’t quite the right word. I’m referring to the resin tending to slide off the board due to the curve in the rail/deck shape. But I think it’s due to me shooting it too slow… I’m gonna warm up my resin tonight before doing the next one (garage has been a little cooler these days) and kick it sooner. Is there a MEKP percentage I should not exceed? As in if I add 3% will it be too brittle? And if so does it really matter for the pin lines?

Thanks,

Santiago

When mixing pigment into resin it is essential to test a little on the board first to ensure there is enough. This should ensure the pinline is covering adequately when brushed on. Different colours can have different mixes. Promoter can help also set a pinline fast, while too much catalyst is a no no. Working within a temperature controlled room is the best, and it is this that can allow a tape to be pulled immediately thereby minimising any resin edge depth. If however the resin starts to tear when you pull the tape, leave it to go off further, and then finish removing the tape. If you find the resin is running perhaps you are brushing too much on. You can tape off the second pinline and do it rail up, one side at a time in a side stand. While I haven’t seen the Master DVD, I assume he mentioned folding the back up masking tape onto itself to prevent resin overflow down the board.

Thanks CB. I warmed up the resin and added a little more catalyst (~2%) for the next pinline and that helped a lot. Was able to pull it after going around twice. You hit it on the head with regards to too much… I have to brush it on lighter next time. Now I just have to work on my taping so I can pull one side at a time and not make a big mess during the tape pull!

Ok that’s done!

Shoot it hot. Spread it lightly. Pull wet. By the third pinline it all came together.

Thanks all for the help. Now I just need practice with taping the damn things straight and even!

Gentlemen,

my deepest apologies for having obscure access to video on our website. It appears that several video clips will not play on a majority of good-above normal computers. The video in question is a WIN MediaPlayer video and audio file but I need to track this codec down and provide it on the website. Hopefully soon I can show that thing to you… …again my apologies.

The embedded clip works fine on a Mac. Windoze users should be able to see it with VLC (Video Lan Client) but might get this error for the audio “main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `undf’.VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.”
