Resin question?

I’ve switched from resin work on boards to resin work on offshore fishing lures and I’m currently using Silmar Polyester on the lures heads, what I’m looking for is another type of clear resin that’s a tad more durable and a little more consistent when the temperature changes. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and it doesn’t have to be polyester, it can be anything as long as it’s clear and not too much of a pain in the butt to work with.

I use epoxy on all my lures and custom rods…This includes repairs or re-dos.Herb

Sounds like you need to start looking at epoxy. Don’t know about a particular brand that is temperature stable, tooling resins have that kind of stability in mind, the epoxy use industry uses a lot of heat curing so that problem is solved for their molds, but not necessarily for surfboard or retail use. Clarity is always an issue with epoxy, water clear is a particular specification, not real common, but specified for the surf, sail board builders amateur and commercial. Resin Research Epoxy is clear, don’t know about the other brands used by surf, sailboard users. Where are you located?

Herb, what type of mold material do you use with the epoxy, I’ve been using Dragon Skin (a too costly Platinum silicone) and it doesn’t work with epoxy.

GT, I’m in Cocoa Beach and have access to all the goods, how consistent is the Resin Research when it come to clarity?

here ya go barlowstackleshop.com rod and lure making supplys resins blanks

Retire, I 've been thinking, its probably going to be touph to find temperature stability with clear. Most epoxies are amber colored, the tooling resins used in the commercial molds that will have the temerature stability don’t need to be cosmetically beautiful clear. Clear is somewhat special for finish products. Don’t know if Resin Research would even have temp. stability data. You might try System 3 , they have a clear epoxy, special for sail and surf boards and they are very technically savvy, they might have temp. stability data for some of their products.

Hey, thanks for the info, I’ll look it up.

Howzit retire, Machine resin ( I think that’s the name) or the resin used for making molds is what a lot of my friends use for making lures.Aloha,Kokua

casting resin is low heat made for thick pours water white polyester, super clear

Howzit nat, That’s the resin I was thinking of. Aloha,Kokua

We’ve sold material for this and I saw the finished product … nice. You use RTV silicone for the molds. RR slow or extra slow is the right hardener and 2020 resin. Demolding is done with compressed air. Fairly simple methodology.

Thanks, the info is greatly appreciated!

Time to go and buy some stuff.

Hey Greg, I use UV activated resin to capture glitter before it sinks in the lure inserts and poly resin has curing problems when placed over epoxy lamination, will the epoxy have any reaction to the polyester insert?
