Resin Research Praise

Hi Guys,

haven’t been on here in a while…just been busy. but this last week I had a shaping and glassing marathon with a friend of mine. We shaped and glassed two boards in four days. For some people that’s not much but that’s more than I could take (as well as my gf). We also had a reconnaissance mission to steal the template off of a lost round nose fish from jack’s in HB…but that story is for another time.

My friend and I decided to go the epoxy route this time. and we got our RR epoxy from graphite master in LA. I have to tell you that it was worth it. it was really easy to work with and no smell (no smell!!) actually it had this faint smell that reminded me of art class…and sanding was easy. I actually didn’t even measure that good but it hardened good and nice with very little care. some say that they get little drips, well I got about the same drips as poly but that could just be my technique. In short, the boards came out good and very light. I actually called Greg L. to ask some questions. now that’s customer service! the only problems I had were the epoxy hot coat not sticking to the lam coat but that was quickly fixed by doing a quick search in swaylocks and finding that i needed to wipe down the board with alcohol. I just grabbed the only solvent i had (acetone) and wiped it on and it worked.

My friend had to do some ding repair with his old poly board and as soon as he was mixing this little cup of poly the smell was everywhere. I don’t think I’m going back to poly. As for price, I bought the 3 gallon system for $160.00 which is kinda expensive because graphite master didn’t have anything smaller but we were able to glass 2 shortboards with 1.5 gallons so that’s $40.00 per board. Not too bad in my book.

PS- when i said “steal” the template, I meant tracing around the board and getting the dimensions of fin placement, nose,& tail measurements while in the store and hoping that the clerks wouldn’t see us.

Howzit?!? About 35 years ago, in Cocoa Beach, I was in a hui with G.L. and Scott Busbey. Greg was into resin research even back in those days. For a while, we even had a resin sponsor. This really enabled us to make some major progress with “taxidermy resin construction”. Although our ‘shissors’ were shtuck in the wall, we still had ‘2 keys’. Shoot! Dang! Craze! Tereesha? Happy days. Aloha…RH
