Resin Research Question?

Hello folks,

I am shaping my first board at a buddy’s house I am just about done with the shaping part. He is leaving town for a few weeks so I will not be able to glass the board at his place. I will be using resin research Epoxy. I have a basement that I may be able to glass the board in. I have 2 young children, Does resin research epoxy let off any toxic fumes?? My basement is not vented very well. I just want to be sure I can do this down there. Thanks In advance

I glass in my subterranean lair…I just set up a box fan in the window to forcibly circulate air.

They won’t smell a thing.

I did my first board in my garage with the only ventilation being the leaks around the door. I didn’t wear a respirator and I didn’t notice but a trace of a smell.

With that being said if I wanted to would there be any down fall to glassing out side. I live in Erie, PA the temps are around 75 this time of year?

things will get stuck in your hotcoat…ask John Mellor.

After you cut the cloth,a breeze will remove it from the board…

Thanks for the replies. It is very much appreciated. The board I will be glassing is 6’6" 22 1/2" by 3" It is stringerless EPS. I am not sure how much resin I will need. I am thinking of buying the single board kit. Will that be enough resin. I plan on doing 3 6oz layers on the deck & 2 6 oz layers on the base. Is that over kill on the glass side of things??

Depends on the weight of the foam, but sounds good to me. I don’t know about the “single board” amount.

If it’s not to late, you may want to consider compound curves on the deck, and 45/45 degree orienting patches on the bottom nose and tail.

Depending on how “heavy” of surf you plan on surfing - you may still buckle/snap the board w/out any stringer - I’ve been happy w/my 1/2"+ cedar = quarter buckles = deck side rail to stringer, has been the worse.

Hey danpar814

Good thing with epoxy is its extended work time.

If you run short mid lamination, you can mix up another batch and keep going.

I used to do this early on so I wasn’t wasting too much resin.

Cheers

I’m guessing that you live in the United States??? Check with your supplier for real prices…A One board kit will cost about $100 , a Three gallon kit costs about $200. I get 4 boards from the 3 gallon kit…some claim to get 6 boards…Do the math…add 20 bucks for Additive F.

Resin is a toxic chemical…if your children get too close to the Additive F they will turn into fury little monsters…

…edit…Woops…" I live in Erie, PA".

Your glass bill sounds ok, but will require more resin. A three pt. kit won’t cut it. Go for the 96oz. kit, or better yet, th 1.5 gal. kit, and plan to do more boards soon.

I got a 1.5 gallon kit from Fiberglass Florida with 4 oz of additive f for $130 (no shipping). I glassed my first board with a lot of waste, which I hated, and barely put a dent in it. I should have enough to do my 9’6" and some for future ding repairs.

Hey danpar814

Remember when we spoke on the phone I said you can get a bit more strength in the lam by biasing each layer of the weave a little. Got that tip from NJsurfer a while ago. With a stringerless you want all the strength you can get…

We just got some 3.2 oz S-2 cloth in that can save a bit of weight for your board.
