Resin Swirls

I’ve seen some guys tape off the deck of a board, then proceed to basicly squirt what looked like colored resin(?) all over the freshly shaped board. They then glassed the deck clear with the now colored deck showing through. I saw a picture of a 1969 gordon and smith 6’10 egg, with really nice green/yellow/blue squeegee passes that looked like a big flower. Does anyone know how to achieve this? It is similiar to the above but not the same. Thanks-cheg

Hey Ry, Ah yes, The famous resin swirls! I’m looking at one right now. It’s a board I did in high school (1970)that I kept 'cause it looks so cool! You do it right on the foam. You CAN use squirt bottles. We would just use resin buckets and pour the resin on so all the streams would look a little diffrent. The key to doing this is to use some clear resin also. This helps to keep the colors separated and lets some white foam show through. You put all the colors and the clear on, let them flow out a bit, then squeege ONCE . You can do all kids of trippy stuff!Have fun! aloha

Aloha Tom, sounds fun. Having only glassed a few of my own boards I have a couple of questions about “swirling”. I’m assuming you lay the clothe down then drool the colored resin over the clothe, now here is my question do you leave space between the colors so that when you squeegee they don’t mix, does it look cool when they mix or is that where you pour clear resin like you were saying? P.S. Where do you live in the islands. I just moved to Cali. 3 months ago from Pupukea. Man do I miss it. I’m going back over to visit mom and dad (and maybe catch some surf) next week. Appriciate the knowledge being shared.

I’ve made a board just like that one, mailed the pictures to swaylock. Try to contact him for the pictures. If it won’t work, mail me It’s simple accrylic paint on the blank than glassed, good result, I think. Couple clarifications though…You first pour the colors on (seperately), then pour clear resin over that? After it goes off and dries you then glass clear? Thanks man!

“acid splashs” and “tigerstripes” are done with different colors of resin applied seperately when laminating. “resin swirls” are different colors of resin mixed in one bucket and used in the lamination. a “foam stain” is colored resin applied to the foam and the lamination is clear on top of that. the best way to learn about the outcome is to experiment. too much information on the subject could ruin the joy of discovery.
