im ordering a new board and i was thinking of a dark blue or deep red resin tint, any advice ? what colors melt wax off fast or delam- thx
Those colors will get pretty hot but OK if you just get the bottom and rails done.Yellow is (to me) the ultimate tint color…doesn’t generate much heat, masks the natural tendancy of boards to turn brown, easy for the laminator, doesn’t show blank flaws like scratches etc.A great looking combo is an orange bottom with a yellow tint deck…black resin pins. Yellow is also great for finding your board in the rip at Sunset…
This is interesting. I’m speaking to Gene Coper about a board at the moment. Are we saying that his deep red resin (“Blood”) is going to shed wax like a mad thing? Of course I could go for the white deck…but there’s something very beguiling about the all over shade.
Like a husky in summer…
Seems to me that you could get whatever color you want, just use common sense.Don’t leave the board deck up in the sun,if you are in the water and the wax starts getting soft just give it a roll over to cool the wax. Also there is a little known geezer wax called paraffin that you get at the grocery store, its all we had in the sixties and it worked fine. Its harder and we used to melt it and brush it on…scuff it with sand to rough it up.It also was easier on the body as far as wax rash is concerned. Most of you guys already know this so I posted it for the younger groms…say 38 years old or less.If you melt wax use a double boiler or Mom’s kitchen may become an inferno.Hey I still have the remnants of surf knots, they were a real status symbol at one time.Enough of these stories for now,you kids get to bed. I turn 46 on Wednesday CL but your info is still very useful! I’m UK based so the chances of extended periods of tropical sunshine are slim at best. But I’ve got a boat load of “base wax” from the US (bizarrely something which we can’t get here) and I’m hoping that a good wax coat and taking the precautions you noted should get me through. Unless of course I can persuade Gene and his crew to lay down a parafin layer…!
Thats funny SG.The wax I am speaking of is the type used for canning and preserving…goes by the name of Gulfwax here in the USA.UK terms are different, you guys call clamps “cramps” and a clear finish “polish”.Cheerio. R.B.
