Hey guys i dont know if this has been asked before but is there anything else that can be used to tint resin other than the tints that you can buy on foamez? I need something that i can get at home depot of wlamart or something like that. Please let me know. Thanks, Cam
dont quote me ,but Ive heard someone useing the tints from the paint mixer guy at Home depot
you could befriend him and ask for a few squirts of test samples
PM me if you’d be into driving up the Bethesda MD (right off the 270 spur) during the week (day). I have some stuff (pigment/tint) you might be able to use (basic colors). Do you need right away or are you trying to save $$$. Gas isn’t cheap anymore.
Thanks a lot for the offer! but i have school during the week… im just looking into this because im doing some skateboards for me and a friend and i wanted to try a resin swirl… it’ll be my first ‘glassing job’ so i thought it’d be cool to experiment… but yeah im tryin to save money thats why im not goin through foamez and also im gonna glass tomorrow so i would need to be able to go out and get the stuff at homedepot or whereever…
No problem. I figured it was time - the foamez stuff isn’t too expensive. Good luck & have fun.
yes home depot has tints that i have used sucessfully. they are in the paint dept in little white tubes. i asked the guy in the paint dept about using the tints from the machine they use to mix paints, but he wasnt interested in selling them to me, so i asked at my neighborhood ace hardware and they were willing to sell me some. i have yet to take them up on the offer.

You can use quite a few items actually. I know powdered Tempera paints work. Here’s a link to an article where they test a bunch of alternative pigments, tempera paints included: here
Yes, the paint tints work.
Most hardware stores carry some sort of fiberglassing supplies - tubes of pigments from that section work fine. The tubes in primary colors, black and white at my local store say “Coloring Agent for Epoxy and Polyester Resins.”
the ink from my inkjet printer worked a treat for me with epoxy.
im sure there are different kinds of inks that may or may not work with different resins, but its worth testing it out on a small sample before you glass.
auto acrylic works a treat
The Home Depot thing works, whether you buy the little white tubes or beg the guy behind the counter for paint pigment hold the paint. Just be ready if you do the latter – I asked for a specific color they had, and it turns out the recipe used by the computer only produces 1 amount (the amount needed to color a gallon, I guess). This particular pigment was very powerful, so I now have 17 ounces of pigment for this color – enough to do a lot of foam…
You can also make tints and pigments on your own using powdered or flake pigments purchased from hobby shops. There’s a great thread on this somewhere here on Sways, and you can make any freaky color you can imagine, but it’s not cheap to get started.
Hastings Plastics in Santa Monica also sells tints and pigments, and they’ll ship, in case you’re just looking for a different supplier. Lots of good colors!
Nova,
The home depot thing works but you get some strange looks. Many moons ago we used testers acrylic model paint. The only problem it takes many many jars to get a pigment. Most boat stores sell pigment but that are very expensive. We have even tried instant coffee and coco. Both worked to some degree. It smells real good when you are working with it!

the little white tubes brasco is talking about are called “TintsAll”. the stuff works great, and you only need a little bit of it to get a nice color. the more of it you add, the more opaque its gets.
i dont know if anyone else has tried this but i tinted some epoxy using acrylic paint and that seemed to work really good. there didnt seem to be any bonding or curing issues…
