Resin Tint Confirmation

Can I confirm the following please?

Assuming you’ve tinted the bottom of the board, done your cut lap etc on the top.

You then want to do a different colour or design tint on the top of the board so you tap off the lap etc. Do you only do one layer of cloth up to where you've taped (so you’re not wrapping the lap or rail), do the resin tint and then once lap is cut and resin is off do a final layer of cloth and wrap the lap as per a normal glass job i.e Just plain clear lam resin?

This would then mean the rail is only lapped once from the deck and once from the bottom instead of the standard three times?

Thanks

Mick

That’s sort of an inlay technique. I’ll do that if the colors are very different, which isn’t often. If you’re doing a darker bottom and lighter deck with the same color tone, just lighter, you lap as normal and do a neat cutlap on the bottom. If you’re doing an inlay, you can do the color on a light layer of cloth, then do double deck clear with lighter cloth over that so you have three total layers. You can tweak the cloth bill to get the weight you want - like three fours = two sixes (except the three fours will be stronger, some say). Or go even lighter, like 2oz for the inlay, then do double fours over that if you’re trying to save weight.

I agree with NJ surfer

adjust as needed to get what you want

I do a lot of inlayed decks and vary the cloth weight to get results

I usual do the inlay with the same cloth as the bottom to keep the cut line level

then just add a second (same weight) and sometimes a third deck layer of lighter cloth

Oh, so simple!

Great advice guys, thanks! Makes sence when you put it like that!

Okay, let get some more pigment!
