Ran into this same thing when I went to glass my first boards…

I used the pigments from fiberglass supply with fantastic results. Add a whole bunch of their pigments to the resin, it becomes opaque, it is “pigmented”. Add just a little of the same pigment to your resin, it becomes a transparent color, it is “tinted”.

Simple as that.

Try art supply stores or paint stores.

Real pigment has added white.

Tints are transparent no matter who much you mix into your resin…that allows for cure anyways.

Weak pigment fades in splotches, looking very garage.

LeeDD, are you referring to the pigments used to tint house paints? If so I have an endless supply at work.

Works fine!!

Tints are transparent, with a color that is clear based.

Pigment is color with a translucent white based color, and can almost hide a wood stringer with light coloring.

One neat effect I did on #7 or so was mixing the two in blue, so parts were tinted clear seethrough and others were translucent blocked.

Most peeps thought I just made a dumb mistake, as usual.

Sooo…

If you mix in a little white pigment with whatever color tint you want, you basically have yourself a colored pigment.

Is that right?

A “moderate” amount of pig is better, more even, mixes easier.

Resin is easily tinted by adding a drop or more of paint tint. My local paint shop gives me mine for nothing, because I only get half a small film canister at a time. They have many fantastic colours that do great bleeds or swirls as you call them.

My fav. bleed is to mix up enough resin for the bottom, pigment colour it white, divide this amount into 4 smaller containers then add a couple of dashes of tinted resin to each container, this gives you 8 different coloured swirl. The white and the colour batches are all catalysed individually before putting together, do not stir after mixing.

Have fun.

I stand corrected, LeeDD. Makes sense… White for pigs to make them opaque. Although I have gotten pretty damned close to completely opaque with just a heavy tint.
