I’m in the middle of a delam repair - I removed some glass and have been filling craters in the foam with q-cell/resin prior to glassing. Since it was cool last night (55-60 F), I added a little extra catalyst but it apparently wasn’t enough. I’m trying to sand the q-cell/resin I applied last night to smooth it but it’s pretty gummy and difficult to sand. It feels slightly tacky -about the same as the sandable q-cell/resin. Does anyone know how I could fix this? If I bring it in the house for the night will it harden? Thanks a lot!

Just recoat it with sanding resin(add some styrene and surfacing agent if you got it),and make it HOT!!! LOTS OF CATALYLIST SAY:10cc-20cc to a pint.Herb.

George You need to add wax and styrene to you q cell so you can sand it, Thats the only difference between lam resin and filler resin Rabbit But herb give you better detail, but the same thing
George You need to add wax and styrene to you q cell so you can sand it, > Thats the only difference between lam resin and filler resin>>> Rabbit But herb give you better detail, but the same thing …so, have I been doing this wrong? I’ve been adding q-cell only to laminating resin and filling the craters (that’s what I think I read in the product info). I seems to sand OK once it’s cured - except for the batch that cured gummy on the cold night-before-last. What I’ve done now is to add hot lam resin over the gummy q-cell/resin. It’s curing today and I was planning on sanding this afternoon. I don’t have wax or styrene but I thought I could get by without. Do you think I’m on the wrong track?

Get ahold of premixed surfacing resin(hot coat resin) If you don’t mix resins often, then just buy some for ding repairs(surfacing or hot coat or the basic home depot stuff other than pure laminating).

Laminating Resin sands fine once you get through the tacky outer layer. the problem is that getting through it can go through a few sheets. i had a similar problem to you in that a hot coat got too cold and didn’t properly cure. i put it in an enclosed area with some good heaters and that helped a bit but the real trick was discovering that although i couldn’t sand it with my power sander it wet sanded beautifully with paper and a sanding block. i would give the wet sanding a try but you may have to be careful if there is exposed foam around the area you are sanding. maybe tape it off or something. also wetsanding just leaves such a better finish. good luck. cheers, trev
