Restoring old decals.

Ok, this is my first post on sways.

Although I've been lurking for a while now and absolutely love it.

Have been inspired by what's on these forums to have a go myself at a little restoration project.

The board is one I just picked up off ebay. It's a nev hyman quad. Cost $45.

I'm guessing early 80s.

Overall condition is good for age.

BUT the decals have "lifted" in places. The glass on top is solid though.

Is it possible to get some resin back in under there, maybe with a syringe or something?

Any ideas, tips, tricks appreciated.

Have had a look at the search function, but could not find any topics specifically about restoring lifted decals.

I'll try and post a pic.

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave -

It's hard to tell if the glass is bruised, lifted or both.  Either way, the logo is intact on top of the glass.

Assuming it is a polyurethane/polyester construction, I would try feathering out an opening along the top edge of the delamination and injecting some catalyzed resin thinned with a bit of styrene.  With some careful 'massaging', you might be able to resaturate some of that bruised delaminated fiberglass.

Cover with wax paper and wrap a strap around it to squeeze the delam back in place.

Any residual bruising might be best treated by scuffing around the repair and fogging in some red acrylic before glassing as you would a normal ding repair.

Thanks John

I'm going to try that method, on a small decal first, and see how I go.

There's quite a few other little repairs needed aswell, so this could be a good learning curve for me.

Ok, worked out how to post the pics now.

Here's the deck showing how the decals on the rails have turned white, pretty much right along the line of where they have been cut by the look of it.

Same with the one around the legrope plug.

The ribbon shapes are airbrushed.
