i was referring to the “surfboards by joel tudor” (at www.joeltudor.com). i’m not sure what the prices run on the retro shorties, but i know his longboards generally go 900+, so i’d imagine these would be relatively expensive (as would the hobie shapes).
Is there an online dealer or website for Chris Birch?
I thinkthe retro single takes you back in time and they work basically the same now as they did then…for a single fin to feel good and something you want to continually ride ,go for a single fin with todays refinements, the out line rails bottom curve etc like the modern board…if you want to go back in time the retro is good…the future is exploding with foiling…riding out of the water
For modern performance surfing, I don’t think there has ever been an improvment on Mccoy’s original no nose single until he came out with the nugget. This is only my opinion, but the old single fins were replaced for a reason and the modern surfboard still pretty much uses a narrower version of that original board. As Cheyne says though some are not looking for progression they are looking to find something in the past that is lacking in the present. Both have their place. I like it all as long as it’s not a popout. Modern surfboards for the most part are too skinny and too thin for the average surfer to enjoy into middle age. Thats why many are trying older designs.
chris, if your from LI,ny definitely go to talk to Tommy Bunger at Bunger Surf Shop in babylon. He can hook up with an awesome board at a much better price than that Al Merrick you were looking at.
My 2 cents,
shape your own. it will save you some money and you will have much more fun surfing it.
Good Luck in whatever path you choose,
George
Check these out.
I just saw those Chris Birch singles in my local shop…the exact boards, or so it seems, out of Ricky Carroll’s factory, most had single wings, pretty sick looking shapes.
yeah i was looking at bunger
they look great
but i was thinking i might be able to get some better quality wise for the same price (490)
what do you think 5foot9arak
chrisj895 from nysurf…the Chris Birch’s are at All Seasons in Long Beach across from the train station.
k thanks
charlie junior quoted me a 6’0 modern single fin fish with a gloss coat for 420. Not the greatest price, i just happen to like the feel of bunger’s
i like the joel tudor retros, hands down. they’ve got a lot of soul.
YESSIREEEEEEE…
I am currently shaping a similar board to his “Karma” shape, I love it so far, but am trying to figure out what fin config to go with…It’s a 6’0", 16" nose, 18" tail (Round tail) and 22" wide.
gotta love that good karma, eh
NYsurfer7,
I saw on another thread that you're also considering buying a Surf Prescriptions singlefin. The SP and the CI both are singlefins but they are totally different one from each other. Maybe first you have to know what kind of shape do you want.
If you just want a single fin like the ones R. Machado or Donavon ride, go and buy one of them, but if you want to be happy with your new surfboard think on what you want, the waves you want to surf with it, etc...
im pretty sure i know what im looking for
A. something with more “soul” with like a more “chill” feeling
B. not like the SP because thats looks for more ripping at wackin the lip im not into that
c. im surfing all the way from knee high to head high waves…
so im looking for a shape more liek the al merrick but listening to you guys it seems like there alot more better boards out there for a lower price…
Maybe you like this board, is from Steve Brom, and it belongs to a swaylock’s user.
