reusing boards

Hi there I’ve just bought a 60’s Bilbo 9’8 surfboard in the UK. Its in a pretty bad state and even has a mast foot glassed into the middle of the board. Is it possible to strip the glass off the board and reshape it? Is this wise and if possible how do you do it? If not should I just fill the mast foot with resin and wax it up? Thanks Rich

Any thing is possible, but unless the glass is failing it may not be worth it. To reshape it cut the glass in the middle of the rail with an angle grinder-dremmel. Then put on some gloves and rip the glass off. Cut out the mast foot and glue some foam in with polyurithane glue(gorilla glue). Shape and glass.

Have fun Ian

Do not reshape that relic, please!!! Bilbos were boards we were drooling on when I started surfing and Jo MORAIZ imported a few for his shop in Biarritz… If one thing, get that f…ing mast foot out and repair properly, then keep it. Unless you want to trade for a new one: send me photos by PM, OK? Just to see if it’s worth it.

Did you get that one off ebay…?? Can see Balsa is cringing at the thought of you attacking it with a dremel!

I have just lammed my first recycle job, looks good so far, but getting the mast box out is not easy! Make sure also that you store the foam blank once stripped for a while in a warm place to get any moisture out of it before you start working on it, I was amazed at how much was in this one after I got the old glass off. Will post some pics later.
