I went to Pearl Art today and was able to find a pad of Japanese Rice Paper (Washi) - High Quality. Is this even the right stuff for lams? It looks way too thick and opaque to saturate properly. Were this a clear board I might consider it but it’s painted and for someone else.
Also I had no luck trying to convince Kinkos to print what I wanted. Normally they’re helpful in these sorts of situations. I have a color printer, but there is no guarantee that tonight would be the one time it decides to not print everything in green. Are there any online printers that can do this type of job?
Rachel I use a different paper it is a heavey rice paper that goes clear . I do digital lams for a number of professional builders and always get a great response. so you don’t need a super thin piece of rice paper. If you need somebody to do this for you send me a PM and we can work out the details.
Hey Rachel - I’ve used several kinds of rice paper, and some of them are very opaque and still come out clear - in fact they hold print detail better than some of the lighter papers.
You might try a test layup if you are really doubtful, but just because the paper isn’t nearly “see thru” doesn’t mean it won’t work.
The stuff I’ve been using is quite strong, comes on a roll, and is for “sumi calligraphy, water color, and sketching” according to the label.
It is Sumi-E Painting and Calligraphy Paper. I’m very tempted to try it out but I don’t really need 48 sheets and it’s pretty expensive. I wish I could just get it one sheet at a time.
I think I still might return it and look for something else. Of course I still need to find a place to print my lams.
That stuff you sent me was perfect, I’ll never ever run out of it, thanks forever for that…
Tip for Rachel, even if you only want one logo done, get the whole sheet printed with lots of them (depending on size), then you’ll always have spares/backup…
Only stirring you about your Mum…so stop teasing me with the scuba gear etc…hehehe
I decided to try some of this because of the price. It is very opaque (almost like regular paper), but prints better on my HP than the thinner stuff and goes absolutely clear with polyester resin (haven’t tried epoxy).
I just found out I can’t return the paper, so I have a feeling I might test it out with some resin. If it does go clear I’ll be very surprised and very happy.
Oneula, thanks for the offer. I might have to take you up on that if I shape more boards. I have a feeling this will be the last one before school starts and I can go back to concentrating on more important things, like surfing.
