I just finished sanding (by far, the most difficult part of making a surfboard) my first glass job and I noticed an interesting phenomenon.
The resin dust seems to be attracted to the rice paper, so that I can see the outline of the lam as the resin dust accumulates. At first I thought that I had put the lam on incorrectly but when I remove the dust there is no representation of the lam (via touch, or vision).
Actually the static can come in handy. When we do a really dark opaque glass job you can't see the stringer to put in the fin box so we take a wool rag (cotton works but not as well) and rub across the tail back and forth really fast. Then you take a little handful of sanding dust and blow it across the tail of the board. Most of the dust sticks to where the stringer is located and makes an outline that you can use to put in the finbox.
I have to say, these are the types of tips that make Swaylocks worth reading… thanks Troy! (Now, if I can just Remember this one the next time I do a dark board, ha ha).
