richard kenvin

Nice piece on Richard Kenvin and his board interest over on surfline.com.  Talks about Simmons, fishes, asyms., etc.

This photo was from 2007 down in southern Baja. Blew my mind to see this guy walking up the point with this board. A few of us had been riding some big Simmons inspired boards made by Paul Gross for a few years so I was firing questions at Kenvin… he in turn asking me how to get in touch with Paul…as he remembered Paul talking about Simmons in some old surf magazines. Not sure if this was the original “Casper” board…but after Kenvin surfed Malibu and Rincon on these type boards later that year, huge interest was generated as is now evident everywhere we surf.

Shortly after this, I would see Kenvin at Malibu on Alaia type boards…going faster than I ever saw anyone go on a Malbu wave…

Whatever happened to his movie(Hydrodynamica) that was in the works back in those days?

I ordered a mini from RK at Sacred Craft Ventura in '09. They are fun boards. In the Surfline article he talks about the 99% of us that don’t need to ride “the pro board” as our livelyhood does not depend on it. We can ride whatever we want. And that the same wave we ride day in day out can have a whole different feel on differing equipment. That in itself can energize your surfing. Good stuff.

I truly hope we see the movie come out.

I spoke to him briefly at the board show in SC a few years ago.  He said something about keeping the fun and games going as long as he can.  My sentiment exactly.  Mike

cheers Mike !

I asked about the movie at Sacred Craft in 2009 and the guy manning the Hydrodynamica booth told me that he thought it would never get finished since there was always some new spin on what a surfboard can be in production somewhere and which would need to be included in the film. I asked about doing part 1, part 2, etc and the guy said that’s what he was wondering.  When I picked up a board from RK two years ago, his comment was that there had been “delays”.  I too would love to see what footage might already exist.

Hi Ben,

I just assumed after waiting all these years that there will not be a movie and Richard has moved forward with his interest.
