Rick Griffin obscure works

Bonhams auction house has a few RG items being auctioned. Try the following for an online catalog. The online catalog didn’t sem to have everything that was on display, but maybe it’s all on there (?)

The link needs to be copy/pasted into the URL window in a continuous line. Or, just go to www.bonhams.com and search Rick Griffin. This weekend in San Francisco there was a showing of the items to be auctioned (in NY mid-May). They had no problems with photographs, so I thought I’d post this rough sketch and I hope posting these two won’t get anyone upset.

The stuff being auctioned was not nearly as magnificent as what was in the show last summer in Laguna Beach, but there were several really interesting pieces, like illustrations that were gifts to some of his family members.

and this isn’t one of them

Hey Man,

I appreciate the post…not for any likelihood of owning a Griffin piece but for the long-time love of his work.

Griffin and his cronies from San Fran’s golden age of rock posters have influenced my art from day one.

Fillmore Theatre, Jefferson Airplane…The Dead…I was born too late!!

Victor Mososco, Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin…genius’ of their time.

Josh

Saw the show in Laguna…maybe it’s just me but seeing the roughness…the realness of an original makes the work seem like magic… makes the human element undeniable, which in turn makes the quality of the work more remarkable. Seeing extensive use of whiteout and cut and paste activity on commercial work does not diminish the end result. The apparent fragility of the original of I think it was the 5 Summer Stores poster art…the only things I’ve seen that compare in surfing are an original Blake hollow with cast drain plug, a Simmons, boards in the Bishop Museum, and the Greenough exhibit when it was in Santa Barbara. Love this stuff.
