Rick Griffin Surfboard?

Supposedly, this board was made by Rick Griffin?  I’m dubious at best, but thought I’d throw it out there, in case anyone recognizes it?  Looks to be a stripped down old long board blank, with a high density foam wedge stringer, with balsa on each side of foam stringer.  No name, just #10 written on the tail.  Griffin art work, top and bottom.  Basic shape job and backyard glass job.  Anybody out there know who may of made this?

I cannot tell you who may **have **made it. I seriously doubt it was Rick Griffin. I have never heard anyone speak of him building a board of any sort. That artwork could have been copied from a number of sources and placed under the glass. I can tell you that the finbox is a first generation Fins Unlimited box. Of that I am certain.

Besides, RG was a gifted artist and would not have done such an ugly shape, even if he had shaped a board.

Nothing about it shows the hand of a gifted artist.

That’s what I was getting at, Bill. RG was a master. His lines were flawless. That POS doesn’t have his fingerprints on it.

fully agree! while it would great if Rick Griffin made that board, it seems impossible. i want to think that if Rick Griffin ever built a board, it would be so badass. i doubt very much that he would have used the particular mismatched images, or shaped such a board. i know that i myself have placed Griffin artwork on so many skateboards, surfboards, etc… Looks like the work of a devout fan like myself (and clearly Sammy A!).** **I think it’s a great story though, and will always start a good conversation. And anything with Rick Griffin graphics, no matter how they got there, is instantly way cooler!

What a bunch of elitists.  That board looks better than most stuff posted here on Sway’s.  Nice blank with the foam-wedge cut T-band, nice cuts on the volan and not a bad outline.  Even the heart logo placed a bit off center shows some carefull thought.

And I know plenty of artists who can’t shape.

Mystery solved - ghettorat shaped it!

I take exception to that comment. I prefer to think of myself as a judgemental snob. Thank you.

I smell hyperbole.

I will agree that the board looks better than some of the stuff I’ve seen here over the years. But, that’s still no great accomplishment.

Hence, the butthurt?
