I found this on thier site pretty interesting. Lastly we carry surfboards designed, shaped, glassed, sanded & finished by professionals. These professionals have many years of experience in surfboard design & building, they employ professional surfers to test out their designs & are constantly enhancing their designs to bring you the best possible designs. They build their boards in state of the art factories which insure that you will be getting the best surfboard at the same time protecting our environment from the harmful effects which is the byproduct of surfboard building. Surfboard building is a dirty business with lots of toxic vapors & dust which can hurt the people building the boards & the our environment. The professionals we represent build their surfboard in factories which meet or exceed the environmental standards of the areas they reside in. Don’t be fooled into buying a board from some guy who builds them in his garage or a shed behind his house. Their harmful vapors are just blown into our air & their waste in thrown in the trash along with the household garbage to be buried in some landfill which will end up harming our water supply & eventually end up in the ocean. You may think that you are saving a couple dollars but in the end you aren’t getting a board which is the end product of years of experience and built by people concerned about the world we live in. Surfers are supposed to care about our environment, we depend on clean air & water to participate in our love of riding waves. Look to the professionals to supply you with the best surfboard with an eye on the bigger picture protecting the environment. http://www.surfboardglassing.com
About a week ago I actually cut and pasted that from his website, I hit the “post message” button and my computer froze. I turned off my computer and never returned to post it. But I am glad someone did. He’s a jerk for writing that on his website. He claims that he is supporting the environment- pffftttt. He doesn’t want anyone affecting his sales of chinese manufactured surfboards.
Rick talks out of both sides of his mouth. Always tries to play up the enviormental angle if he can use it to help his sales. I guess he isn’t too worried about the polution in China, from the making of the boards in his shop
I like my “shed” in he back yard! Quiet, clean, peacefull…and I use proper PPE and disposal techniques too! Now if I could just find a coupla “Pros” to test my boards…mmmmm Krokus
Yeah…but what about your residential neighbors? Any considerations for them?
hypocracy is so fun when i glass boards in my backyard and charge 300.00 for a board.Didn’t we all start this way?
Starting in your garage is fine. It’s when you are at a full time or consistant production basis, and are charging for your time, (hence professional) it’s time to do the right thing. Just adds credibility to our craft. Regardless. Doesn’t matter how “clean” you are, your neighbors/neighborhood will take it’s toll eventually. Don’t be so selfish.
What about those of us who get paid but not enough to pay the overhead of a real factory? I guess were screwed huh?
Well, Jason, if you’re leaving yourself open to lawsuits from the neighbors, fines for town, city and county noise and pollution and zoning and business law violations, hassles and such because they are not paying you enough to do ‘the right thing’, you’re getting screwed now. Charge more. doc…

Maybe you could be a little more clear on what “the right thing” is and what constitutes a real factory? Proper waste disposal is the issue for most backyard builders. Dust collection and liquid waste disposal are fairly easy to control, vapors are the hardest to control! How many “real” factories actually use replaceable carbon filters?? Most just suck them out with air movers. I don’t shape enough boards to have waste issues at this point. Neighbors? If you live in a neighborhood you have to abide by the sound nuisance laws. I don’t live in a neighborhood so that is not an issue for me. I shape at 2:00 in the morning sometimes, shop is insulated, doesn’t even wake the kids up! I agree, everyone, even if just “hobbying” should use proper PPE (personal protection equipment) dispose of your waste properly and be considerate of your neighbors! The line between hobbying and manufacturing is debatable but some cities have zoning that restrict operating business storefronts from your home. What is the difference between operating properly done boardbuilding and selling realestate or doin’ taxes from your home??? Man I wish the neighbors’s dog would quit barking so I could concentrate on that next outline…MLC
The difference in selling real estate and manufacturing is the noise, pollution, fumes and dust, not only that the but risk of using and storing hazardous chemicals and the danger of fire! Sorry, not the same. Sounds as if you have enough of a buffering zone in your non-neighborhood set up. A properly done set up is operating in a safe industrial zone. If you can hear your neighbors dog barking, I’m sure they can hear your planer at 2:00 am. Either way I would rather fathom the dogs barking than the planer going at 2 am.
…You don’t know much. …I went thru this battle last year and WON , with a suprizing hurt on my association.I still have the paperwork to provide, as a trophy .The city and fire dept. on inspection couldnot find ANY violations and found my shop cleaner than any of the local surfboard building facilities. They also added that if more factories were as thoughful about there neighbors and enviroment,it would make there job much easier. The laws that govern a hobby shop is much different than a commercial shop.My shop exceeds both standards. FUCK RICKS and ANYONE that hides behind this type a bullshit.Herb …PS…oh and by the way ,FYI you can make a set amount of $$$ as a hobbiest ,this is after you discount you spending costs,EAT THAT.
…a MAJOR HARRASMENT SUIT ! …Get help, check your local, state and fedral laws. …Picking on the smaller person is called being a bully,I stand all of 5’-8" and 131lbs. I hate bullies and the ones that have crossed my path(no matter the #s or size) know it all too well.I am undefeated to this day.Herb …Airborne/Rangers lead the way …ALL THE WAY !
…I LIKE F*#king with you. …and you know that I’m f*#king with you. …and I’m good at it ! …so there ! Herb
Hey Herb, Keepin it clean is what it’s all about. No doubt? The less Acetone I use the better I feel about the process. Three things: How to you handle your waste material and what’s your disposal process? Have you had time to do the three black superchargers sets we talked about before the holidays? What’s you new email address? Off to the fin shop, Rich
…I LIKE F*#king with you. …and you know that I’m f*#king with you. …and I’m good at it ! …so there ! Herb
I feel for you, I have also gone through this fiasco and also won. But out of respect for the neighbors and environment, I chose to do the right thing. If your doing any amount of real numbers, it’s impossible to control the dust and fumes. That’s why there are manufactoring zones. Why alienate your self from your community. It is a community you live in, right? A hobbyist and a proffesional are entirely different.
…Waste disposal if solids (foam or fiberglass/resin/)are concidered non-haz.mat.I don’t do enough to fill my cans up every or month for that matter. There are proper ways to dispose of larger amounts. …Acetone or other toxic liquids can be eliminated easily by calling your local government for disposal sites.(you are allowed by law to store up to 10 gallons of these types of liquids in your garage. There is a proper way to do this… as well as making it a gross hazard, check w/ your local/state laws.) …3 SETS OF BLACK GLUE-ONS CORRECT? IF YES, THERE DONE AND BEING MAILED TODAY Rich.Herb
…I was a pro,now a hobbiest,my neighbors love it!I even got them to sign a petition in my favor. …my numbers are low and if they were higher I CAN control the mess and dust, and do.Ask my neighbors. …My neighbors were not the problem, neither is my association anymore. …Some folks in this industry (and a so called friend)saw me as a threat and tried to end my hobby.THEY FAILED MISERIBLY.They also hated that I gave such explict information on this and other sites as to board building, surf and skate.I know who they were too!Herb
