I’ve been obsessed with shaping ever since I got my first board as kid and watched “Chandler” shape a big gun in the movie North Shore. But never really had the resources to invest in the initial cost of shaping startup (planer, blanks, etc) and wasn’t fortunate to learn when I was younger.
But now, having graduated college and have a decent job, I’ve been slowly getting into it. With a little help from Swaylocks and John Carper’s Vid’s of course. But what I’m missing is actually watching and learning from a seasoned shaper with 1000’s of shapes under his belt.
So if any right coast shaper (MD, NJ, NY, DE, VA) has a weekend to let me watch. I’d make the trip. Heck, I’d even clean up your shaping shack or even build you a website for your shapes because that’s what I do when I’m not surfing.
Probably asking a lot here but it worth a shot you know.
Im in NJ. Although I don’t have 1,000’s of shapes under my belt I do have a good understanding of the process and have taught a number of vocational school students to do a decent job. I screw up a few every now and then, but all are ridable. Just bite the bullet and go for it. Drop me a line.
There is a post about a surf expo that happening this weekend in LBI. Not sure how many actual shapers will be there though - at least one guy from here.
There are also two really good shapers in our backyard (S-NJ). Brian Wynn (Wynn Surboards) and Paul Baymore (Fly Surfboards). I believe there contact info is somewhere here in the archives.
B Wynn is related to my neighbor. Story I got was that he has been shapeing/glassing for others and finally came out with his own labeled boards which I now see in local S.J. surfshops.
Being that he is running his own show now he might be open to the website tradeoff deal.
I’ll post some contact info if I can pry from my neighbor.
Is there a shop out in Jersey called “The Beach Hut” or “Beachhouse?” Lots of longboards, and stuff. Met a guy Neil from there, who makes logging videos, on a surf trip in NZ. Anyone know about this shop?
Spent the weekend in OC, MD. Decent lefts near the 7th street jetty. Took my GF out and pushed her into a few on my 8’ mini-mal. That has pretty much become her board. Good times.

Hey Sidestreet… saw your post about a guy named Neil from NJ who made a longboard video. I know a guy from NJ named Neil who made a video called “Drenched In Devotion”. I’m 95% sure that he is the one you met. I’ve never been to the shop… “The Beach House”, but have heard they stock and carry a nice selection of longboards.

Thanks, LB. That’s him! You know him? I’m trying to find his e-mail. Lost it. Hung out with him and his buddies in Raglan '01, and he mailed me a copy of that movie, “DID”. Signed it and everything. Real nice guy. Kind of opened my eyes to East Coast old school longboarding. Showed up with a bunch of Jacobs models.
