Rocker Strength (bend/shaped)

I think I will try a pre molded blank first, but at the same time maybe use that blank as a template for the block of eps? Kill two birds with one cash wad, and get two boards out of it!

hey gulfcoasted

i have been making blanks myself [too]

it takes quite a long time before you have custom made your tools to use, your templates to use,

before you fuck up cutting your first blank

if you are into making everything yourself, and have loads of time

do so, it is very rewarding

but if you want to build a few, it is surely easier to buy blanks.

you will have som much learning to do just shaping glassing sanding…

will you buy jim phillips dvd? it is great

then the glassing dvd others recommended around here with cleanlines in it.

show us the build thread !! there are too little of those.

good luck!

wouter

If your worried about money just buy a used board.

That’s when you want to surf and you are worried about the money.

Not when you want to shape and are worried about the money.

"That’s when you want to surf and you are worried about the money.

Not when you want to shape and are worried about the money."

True!

Surfding and Hans are correct. I already have a decent quiver, but shaping will be a great skill to learn as well as adding too my board count. And possibly saving some $ !

Anyways build thread(s?) will be done before august as we florida children are now free of school! Thanks for all the input!

Have Fun!

I know everybody thinks that their first board will be Merrick or Rusty quality. How hard can it be?

Count on your first few boards being total pigs. Some people many more than that. It actually IS harder than some people think.

You should see if your foam supplier is capable of hotwiring the rocker into the blank for you.Maybe download aku shaper or shape3D and design your boards rocker and foil, then store it in a pdf file so you can email it to them. You should see some of the stuff these foam companies can cut,a surfblank should be fairly basic for them.If they can do it find out the cost then compare it to a similar blank shipped to you.

this discussion reminds me of sitting next to a lifeguard stand on the northshore and watching the tourists or jarheads constantly come up and ask if its safe to paddle out on their boogieboards with no fins even though the beach is laden with warning signs. And then when told no its not safe they walk away and they paddle out anyway only to never make to past the shore break and end up 100 yards down the beach before being swepted in half drowned.

old style was to find a piece of aboandoned junk dumpster diving, strip it and reshape it

anyone can glue up a couple of pieces of styro with elmers and some weights (allot here played around with that in 2003-2004) but GIGO as they say. Mr J and Shwuz have the best threads on home baking blanks on coffee tables.

It will be a challenge but it's not a completely foreign skill too me. High performance skimboards are sort of like scaled down surfboards, just with knifey rails. Thats a good idea jesus, I duplicated the board into aku shaper so I will definately ask. As for the anecdote about being persistant, I'm not trying to start another of the many threads about the cheapest possible way to glue home depot foam together. I was just curious as to how bad an idea it is to bend to create more or less rocker( I have seen generally positive feedback about rocker tables?)

Mr. Coasted, A rocker table and hot wiring get the same end result (somewhat) but are completely different methods. The foam is still in tension while layed up on a rocker table and a hot wired blank is basically inert. With the bent foam, there is still some resistant (to the curve) energy always present as it is compressing the individual cells. When rocker is cut, the structure remains static and no opposition to the curve(s). Clearly this is the way to go of the two. This allows better bond of the skin and a stronger overall board.

tblank has explained this perfectly.

If you make a blank at least keep it static.

Surfboards are under enough stress with the surfer/wave why add additional unncessary tension?

Mr. Gulfcoast now go do the right thing!

Kind regards,

surfding

Tante Grazie, Mr. S'Ding.

Hmm. So with the prevalence and relatively cheap cost of hotwiring the rocker table has become and obsolete/subpar method for foam manipulation? Interesting!

The rocker table plays a crucial role in compsand (to preserve rocker) and HWS construction. But bending foam is not a good idea.
