great planer, i love mine, but if you need new blades than $242.00 to start shaping isn’t really that good of an idea in my opinion. you want to keep your start up cost as low as possible. if you enjoy shaping than slowly get more and more tools. if you buy $1000.00 worth of tools before you even shape your first board, and you decide you dont like it… well now your $1000.00 in tools deep. just my .02 shape your first board with as little as possible. than each board get a new tool and see how they make your life easier.
the 653 is a lot of planer that in unskilled hands will get you in to trouble real fast. $42.00 is a good deal for a “parts” planer. There are so many adjustments and modifications that need to be done to that tool to make it work for surfboard shaping. Start slow take your time “feel the foam” the 653 is a fire breathing dragon. Plus parts are getting harder to find. Start with a cheapo plastic one. There are guys on swaylocks that get by doing a few boards a year that I am sure can give you pretty good advice on saving money on a planer and saving a few blanks that the 653 will eat before you knew what happened.
