roughed up the deck??

i am shaping my first board. did the outline first, trued it up. then i skinned the bottom of the blank with my stanley hand plane and the crust came off nicely. came off in curls like wood does off a plane. then i went to take the crust layer off the deck, and it didn’t come off so nicely. it came off very jagged and rough. it didn’t take big digs out but its not very smooth either. any ideas? am i through the crust? what should i do next…i’d rather not touch the deck again but i wanna be sure i’m through the crust…

Take your sureform and just clean it up. You’ll find out soon enough if your through the crust. If your real concerned about losing too much foam just don’t do any more planeing, use the sureform until you’re down to good foam. Takes a little more elbow grease but it’s safe.

next time use walker foam if you don’t have any power tools . no crust consistant density no softening on the deck less delams are only a few of the plus’s of walker as compared to clark. maybe your blade became dull from skinning the bottom? use the surform have fun

I’ve noticed also that the bottom skin peels right off but often times the deck is a whole different animal. Maybe Sluggo or someone can explain why?
