hi all, I use a router for lowering my stringer, it workt great and fast > and dont damage the foam. Anybody els using a router? Yo I have been doing the same thing when needed.I have a router with 3/4"" straight bit…I glued four little pieces of teflon around the perimeter and lowered the bit to where it cuts flush with the teflon tabs.It will buzz the stringer right on down…works great on decks with a lot of rocker in the nose.Ironically I use this same tool to flush trim my longboard fin boxes…saves a lot of grinding. You can actually skin a blank with this setup…just lower the bit to where it cuts around 1/8".I am using a little one handed Rockwell trim router.Good post…this a real handy tool.I don’t have the computer knowledge to post a diagram but if you saw it you would catch right on.
i was thinking of using a router to cut depth reference points in a stringer for a nose concave. i’m not sure if i’m going to actually do it yet. this make sense to anyone?

Even though it looks like no more glassing for me ,at least here.Just too much to control for my bchy neighbors.(don’t get me wrong I’d bch too!).Herb

Allright J.A. sounds like you are a cranky old Geezer just like me.I started shaping in 1963 with Jim Phillips and was fine tuned by Wayne Land…later on I toiled for Hansen,Hobie,Bahne,Lightning Bolt,Surfboards Hawaii,Inter Island, and on and on(it don’t mean nothin).Talk about old masters what about Terry Martin,Velzy,Yater,Bradbury etc.If you read the archives you find all of this stuff and more.As for that balsa you did I would be stoked to hear how you did it…If I was lucky enough to get long lengths of 2x6 balsa I would first bandsaw out the rocker curve and then glue it up.Chambering is another story…God bless Diff’ may he rest in peace. You and I have been around for a long time J.A…it’s fun to read all of the high tech talk and crazy questions on this site…it is all well meaning and for the soul of surfing. It sounds to me like you could share a lot with us.Now I wanna know exactly how you did that balsa blank.By the way I’m only 55 years old and I learn a lot from these young guys on this site.Tell us more Bro…Aloha

When the Rhino styro filled balsa blanks first hit the market, everyone who shaped them were hitting the foam cores. I repaired a lot of them and hit upon the idea routing 1/2 the thickness of the last plank for a reference point to know when to quit shaping.

JA I made myself a profile machine at Xmas and been working every weekend since Xmas. I have done over 400 blanks in that time and had a ball doing it, everyone that has brought my foam and asked me to profile the blank has commented on how good the finish is. So dont Knock old and new ideas for people like me and others that have only been shaping for a few years because we are having fun with something new.By the way i charge $15.00 for a profile so i have done ok for a weekend job. http://www.southcoastfoam.com.au
On my first two boards, I used the router as blank skinner. The stringer would be cut about a 1/16 of an inch lower that the foam. It was a poor man’s planer at the time.>>> hi all, I use a router for lowering my stringer, it workt great and fast > and dont damage the foam. Rabbit, I built my profile machine from discarded square tubing, taught myself to weld on the project (cussed a blue streak), but in the end had a very well made machine that I ran thousands of blanks on. The biggest cost was the 5 horse power micro processor router and the 3 1/2" cutter, this was just under $400.00. Now that I am so close to KKL and have programs that I have done for other MFGS., it sits lonely begging me to use it.
