"rules for stand ups"

Does any one have in his/her community any rules regarding stand up paddlers,in regards to using the same break as surfers, body boarders, etc…?We are a group of people researching how other communities are reacting to the proliferation of inexperienced and uneducated( as regards to surfing etiquette) stand up paddlers in our community,so we can take action.this situation is very much like what happened when wind surfing and then tow-in surfing happened, except that tow surfers self regulated themselves after a while, and wind surfing rules were put in place by the county, here. But the county seems to be lagging in this regard.

Thank you, mahalo, mahalo, mahalo.will try to get that printed and displayed at the surf breaks here, and will distribute some to all my friends who SWEEP!

Don’t be too hard on janitors. Some paddlers know to stay out of the way of the surfers at “real” surf spots.

At our house we have two paddleboards and some kayaks we take out on occasion. A recent full moon paddle party was a lot of fun as was a day time session on Morro bay…

Rules??? We don’t need no stinkin' rules!

I just got the chills thinking about tipping over in that water.

We have a real problem around the Los Angeles area with SUP riders.

They are notorious around here for paddling in to “surf” areas and display zero regard for the surfers.

Often, a group of them will come out and take turns hogging every wave that comes through.

Surf etiquette seems to have been lost around here in that regard.

I certainly feel that SUP boarding should be put in the same category as kayaks, canoes, etc.

I’m sure that in most places self regulating works perfectly well, but there should be some standard for those places where that is not the case.

Namely places like El Porto and Malibu which are generally heavily populated and where there is the a greater risk of serious injury.

Just my 1.874 cents

Oh… By the way John…this was not aimed at you.

Please don’t take offense

Stand-up paddlers user hours are from 0200-0400 daily !

lol…jk !

Rule#1,don’t use a kayak paddle on a SUB,it doesn’t look like Sweeping anymore!Lol

How about the golden rule: Just because you CAN catch every wave that comes through…doesn’t mean you should.

Double blade paddles are pretty slick. The one in the pics is custom made specifically for SUP… you would never need one like that in a kayak.

Modern day bureaucrats that run SUP events apparently forgot where the whole thing originated and have rules that say “Single blades ONLY.”

Yet another example of stinkin’ rules we don’t need.

Where I surf (Santa Cruz) they are multiplying like rabbits. Truth be told, many (by no means all) have experience as board surfers and know the rules of the road. Of course, some are just complete idiots. Most of them seem to be in their 40s or 50s and they all seeem to have some lame excuse for why the ride SUPs like bad backs, or bad shoulders or something. Generally, they seem to agree that boarders have priority, but they continue to push the limits and will steal a set wave as often as they can. They also seem to like to yak with each other a lot. I just don’t get what the attraction to it is.

I like what they did at San O…

what did they do at San O ?

Shot a man on a SUP just to watch him die…

Damn afoaf!

You wasted your time watchin?!? LOL

At SanO you can only SUP at Dog Patch and south of there. Anything with a paddle can go at Dog Patch. The lifeguards chase them out if they show up in the other lineups.
