I like to do some fairly elaborate air brush work on my boards. Lots of multi color fades, etc. Often am plagued by running or bleeding paint. It is really hard to pin this thing down. I just did two boards - one used Createx transparent yellow - no running. The second used Createx opaque yellow - ran like a sieve. Each board was a tri-color fade - none of the other colors ran (I have found ways to deal with this on the fly, but its a pain in the chops) Here is the essence of my question; has anyone used bonding and catalyzing agents to airbrush paints on surfboards to minimize color runs during the lamination process. Also, my art supplier (Dixie in New Orleans) recommended a clearcoat over the paintwork to seal it. Anyone been down this road? Any info - much appreciated. Thanks Shine
Start by using Pearl all-surface acrylic paint: http://www.pearlpaints.com. Pearl paint bonds to surfaces better than the Createx or Decca paints I have used. It also is more pleasing to the eye than those, or even Golden paints. Pearl all-surface acrylic is great! I even screen T-Shirts with it. -Noodle>>> I like to do some fairly elaborate air brush work on my boards. Lots of > multi color fades, etc. Often am plagued by running or bleeding paint. I think http://www.pearlpaints.com is the WRONG place. I’ll look for the right link. I was buying Pearl All-Surface acrylic paint from Pearl Art Supply in Houston, but they closed! I looked for them on the web, and thought I’d found them… Apparently not. Another art supply guy said he’d heard that Pearl Art Supply moved to Arizona. Does anybody know how to find them? -Noodle

Shine, Check with Createx (http://www.createxcolors.com/) about their clear sealer coat and catalyst which promotes colorfastness, strong bonds and faster drying time… about the same specs as doing airbrushed t-shirts or automotive detail: carefully heat-setting the colors as work progresses (with high temp hot air gun) and then another quick once over after all work is finished. Always avoid thick buildups of paint under resin/fiberglass lamination, much better to achieve appearance of most color by using least amount of actual acrylic pigment. They make great products; I have used them commercially for years. Dale
This link shows the current Pearl Art Supply stores, one in Huntington Beach, CA. http://www.pearlnyc.com/pearl/otloc.html The Store should carry Pearl All-Surface acrylic paint. It comes in short wide-mouth clear-plastic jars. The online store is at: http://www.pearlnyc.com/ But I couldn’t find Pearl All-Surface acrylic paint online.
try liquitex it’s a great beginner paint. No running! buy the basic paints to start with…then coat with Dutch boy spray paint(K-Mart) “clear” acrylics, LIGHTLY!!! THIS WILL ALSO HELP IN LAMINATION.Herb.
