rusty '84

I’ve been think about getting one of these. I’m 5’9" and about 165lbs. Think a 6’2" is too big?

I had a RustyP 7’6" x 19.25" back in 1984 and I floated bellybutton 3" under the surface of the water, while board was completely submerged. I had a 6’3" HotButtered Tri that floated better.

Was 142lbs. then.

Wondered what Rusty was thinking, that was the thickest of the 8 that came in, and Rusty’s gotta be 180 lbs.

So are you saying you think the 6’2" isn’t too big?

The Rusty '84 model is a beefy board. I recommend riding one about your height or an inch or two longer. At 6’0" and 180 lbs, I rode a 6’2" and it was even a bit too much at that length, but I usually ride shorter boards in general to maximize performance and fit the board well in the pocket (I don’t mind putting effort into paddling if it will pay off in performance since I swam competivitely for many years and was a top competitor in lifeguard paddleboard races during my lifeguard career).

About a year ago I was sitting in a buddy’s garage and looked up in the rafters. There he had one of my Rusty’s from 1984 that I’d sold to another friend. We pulled it down and could not believe how flat and much volume those boards had compared to today.

Can’t get these type of board out of my mind lately…

High volume 80’s shortboards.

I had an opportunity recently to get a nugget but found out it was a Surftech, so I’m re-focusing on something like this instead.

The ones I have seen don’t look beefy at all when compared to the real 84’s. When I was 185 and I am 6’2’’ I rode 5’11’’ boards. They were around 12 x 20 x 16 x 3

Bassy…You left out Tom’s quote.

Ok I replied back to you…however I don’t see the text in my post.

Hello Moderators if I said something inappropriate please let me know, although I cannot begin to guess what that would have been.

Cheers

I haven’t seen anything non civil??

I have seen a Rusty 84 right next to an old Rusty Occy style and the old one is just got way more volume.

I think the 6’2" would be too big for you. I’m 6’0" and 185lbs and used to ride a buddy’s 6’0" Rusty '84 in everyday San Diego surf and I never felt that it was too small. I never had a problem catching waves even in mushy waist high slop. For your size, as long as its not your first shortboard, I would get either the 5’10" or the 6’0". I don’t think you’d need anything bigger.

I hope this helps…go get some…

Agreed. Even better, get them to shape it really beefy with the wider tail like they were back then. I think some of the mid eighties thrusters were some of the most interesting shaped. I think the modern ones have been way too refined and more for smaller surfers. Contrary to other hyped up name brands that are popular…Rusty actually was and is a really good shaper.
