So I laminated the last of the boards last night, hand layup with S-2 off the full roll I just purchased.
Regrettably, when I went back to check this morning, the rails had pulled away from the core in several spots.
Is this a common problem? The fabric seems “springier” than E-glass. When I did my gun it was vac’d so no problem.
The wetout wasn’t going so good with the squeegee either, so I resorted to a foam roller, then squeegied afterward. This worked very well and I think I’ll do it again. The wetout went good with little/no runoff over the edges.
I think from here on out, all of my S-2 boards will go in the bag. It doesn’t take but a little more effort anyway.
Now I have to go back and fix all of this tonight … ugh … it’s not gonna look perfect but they’ll be solid when I’m done anyway. I’ll cut off the bad stuff and put some new strips of glass along the rails, then peel ply and bag it overnight. Hopefully the hotcoat will hide the issues. If not, I can always airbrush the rails after sanding the hotcoat, and clear over everything.
Otherwise, they look sick … deck and bottoms came out nice and smooth, and they feel solid. More later.
