The board on the left was made for one of my son’s friends who is a Super team rider and one of Quiksilver’s supergroms. The board on the right was made for Gabriel Villaran. A 4’5 next to a 9’6. Thought this was a really cool picture.
That 4’5 makes the 9’6 look like it’s a 15’!
Hey Mako,
Obviously this lil grom rips. I’m hoping to turn our lil wahine into a ripper (right now she’s 2 1/2 so we’re working on swimming - haha). any idea what board your friends started the kid off with? did they go with a mini mal or jump in straight to a shorty?
Anybody else have an opinion on what to start with?
Much appreciated
JD
Not sure what board this grom started with. He was a standout to me on a TINY shortboard even at 6 or 7. At 8 he was landing airs. Now at 9 he’s landing some crazy stuff. The kid flat out rips. My personal opinion is that it is bad to start groms on over floaty mini mal or foamy boards. That’s my experience based on my 3 kids. The one who started on a 6-foot foamy still suffers from the habits he learned on a floaty board that let him get away with it. I really believe it stunts their progress. Bad habits start on bigger boards.
agree Mako!
Little kids have all kinds of energy, stamina, and coordination.
Look at the kids on the playground (the ones without the helicopter parents at least), they are doing stuff that most adults (teenagers too for that matter) can’t or don’t do.
No reason to handicap them. As long as they have fun, they will keep going at it.
That gun is amazing!
