San O' Luau

Yeaterday was an epic Southern California day, staged at the epicenter of surfing. It was the 7th annual Ohana Kemp family fun day luau at San O’ Point. There were eats, games for the kids and a super bitchin’ raffle for loads of goodies. Many local surf shops, artists, craftsmen and the magazines donating items, with the creme de la creme being the hand carved tikis and two of my shapes. Dennis Kemp supplied me with 2 Walker blanks (Harold kicked those in) and he set me or the demons loose! Both were 9’4", classic shapes, the first being a clear square tail with balsa offsets, 8" out, black glue, with the balsa sticks being hour glass shape, going from 3/4" at the nose and tail, to 1/4" at the middle. The other board had 2-1/8" balsa offsets done with black glue that followed the outline of the board. I drew them first with a 10’ template and redrew the out line at 9’4" with the same template. The stringers exited and inch and a half from the tips of the nose and tail and followed the out line the rest of the way, 4" from the rails. I gave the glass shop instructions to spray the rails red, leaving a gap of 1/2" from the wood. The center was yellow with a same gap from the stringers. The time I put into the blanks and shapes was so rewarding when you see a beach full of folks oooohhing and aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhing, clutching their raffle tickets, hoping this was going to be theirs. Sun, surf, family, it was a good day. Jim Phillips
