I own a black and decker grinder with a set speed at 10000 rpm and the hardest power pad is rated at half that. I’ve been to home depot, lowes, and ace hardware and can’t find any grinder/sander with a lower rpm or variable speed sander.Where can I find the appropriate sander for the job and can I get away with using the one I already have?
Harbor Freight: $25

i just bought the $25 sander from harbor freight last week. haven’t received it yet, but word has it that it’s got the most bang for the buck.
Hey guys,
Remove the spindle head and clen-out the crappy grease in it,and replace it w/ a quality grease like Slick-50.
I have 3 HF sanders(originals from pre 2000).I’m still on the first, and it’s going strong w/ the exception of the continuous “ON” button the went out like 2 years ago.I use it for skaters as well as a house hold grinder, so it sees lots of use.I also have a Hitachi variable, and a Mak(makita 2 speeder) both of these other sanders are a great next step sanders.
Now who the heck is responsible for making the HF sander so popular? I wonder?Herb
Another approach is to buy a router speed control. It can be used with many tools to vary their speed… for example, your router! (eg if you want to use long bits to template your blanks). Here’s what they look like:

Thats the beuty of it. For about the price of a speed control Harbor Freight will build an entire sander right into it at now extra charge. I guess the down side is it only works for one tool.
