Sandgroper, barracuda man , and the rainbow warrior

Caught on digi this morning …

thanks Steve .

The “rainbow warrior” was rescued by this guy from a demolition site . A 5’10" 70s twinnie with immaculate rainbow pigmented foiled twin fins , and a matching rainbow spray . [Sorry , no shots of the board’s bottom available , unfortunately !!]

Nice!! i wore that exact colour/label wettie for years before i busted the zip. nice twinnie! what a score. great surfing too.

His mate [I shall call him “barracuda man” for now ] saw my 5 fin fish and commented “I had a 7 finner a few years back” . Yes , Bert , it was a “Barracuda” board.

He was riding a 6’6 Bob McTavish Tuflite egg , with a carbon fibre fcs back finbox fin , and two GS sized side fins [fibreglass, thankfully !]…

Ian [‘sandgroper ’ , from ‘silly point’?!] , on the 7’ chunky single fin…

Yew the sandgroper! ripping as usual Ian. sweet wave!

more of Ian , on the 7’ ‘tunnel vision’ single fin …

[today [tuesday , here] , he rode it with the winged keel fin in it , just for something different to try …

after all…

…with thanks to Christian for sending me these shots … I hope to be able to catch up for some watershots at some stage soon…

  cheers !

     ben

aka Matt …

Better keep that thing away from the french crew eh

Nice board though, looks like you lot are having a good time down undah…

Here it’s flat and cold…

eno [‘sandgroper’] today …

[again , he’s still on my 7’ singley , Josh !]

How’d the winged keel feel?

hiya janks !

…I think Ian was using my 7 1/2 ‘normal’ template fin in on these occassions , janks …but the times I have ridden it on the 7’er [lots!] , it felt secure.

Meanwhile , here’s a young japanese lady who was getting a few of the “bombs” yesterday …

hey chipfish

thought you might like to see the original ’ Rainbow Warrior ’

took it over to Scott Dillon for carbon dating, his best guess was 58-59 era.

epoxy construction ( red cell foam ), 2 x 16oz layers of glass ( looks like hessian ).

the original fin has been replaced although you can still see the nail heads where it was nailed into position.

new fin is from an exquisite paisley layup that has been royally butchered by an unknown assailant wielding what appears to have been a chain saw and grinder.

ben

[hopefully after seeing hicksy in a few minutes time , I may have some more [today’s] shots of ian to post here]

today

20/2/'07

[…yep , that’s how we type it here …20th february 2007]

and this was sunday’s carnage …

with a munted neck and shoulder’s , I wasn’t swimming out into THESE , breaking in knee to waste deep water …

[bigger and heavier than it looks in these two photos …the wide angle on the digicam always ‘flattens’ things …]

cheers

ben

Hey Ben

Not far from Scott’s museum, maybe 1km. Have you been there? What a classic way to lose a day , talking to a living legend not to mention the boards.

A quick mind in an old rouges body , if you go there with your girl keep your eye on him cause he’s got something going on.

Imagine having lived his life.
