sanding hotcoat and hit weave and foam. repairs?

so a mate and me are virgins to the diy shaping. we shaped a 5'10" disc and 9'0"... it's complicated. so how many layers of glass, what oz, what resins, how much resins and how many coats do we need to do...

I laminate most of my boards with 1 layer 4oz on the bottom and a 4oz and 6oz on the deck. This gives a good strong board that's not too heavy. If I do a longboard I step up to 6 oz bottom and 6/4 top unless it's a bit more oldschool and then I'll do a double 6 on the deck.

I would recommmend you both get a 5kg can of resin if it's your first board - dont try and economise on amount of resin the first time you do a board as it is likely to go horribly wrong - using less resin is great but it makes the wetting out trickier for the first timer...just let it flow...

If you can afford it you try epoxy as it will give you much more time to laminate as the gerl time is vastly increased. If you go for this you will not need as much resin - a 3kg tub is way enough to laminate and hotcoat for your first board - you'll have loads left for fin install, leash plug and repairs.

If you've never seen it done I'd recomend getting hold of a video such a JC's glassing 101 or altermntively search YouTube.

Good luck and dont forget to post pics of your boards!

cheers rich. i'm leaning towards 6oz on the bottom and 4 & 6oz on the deck. anymore info on the process and tinting of resin?

If it’s your first go I’d recommend doing it together with your friend, a squeegee each!
Lay out your cloth on the bottom, cut the lap level with the deck line, pour on your resin and start working it out around the board. One of you continuing to work out the resin and the other starting wetting out the rails. Use plenty of resin…I’d go for a kilo on the bottom and about 1.3 on the deck.
Make sure you don’t use too much catalyst…only about 6ml in a kilo will give you about 20minutes to work it. As soon as it gels stop working.
Once hard flip the board and paint a strip of about 4inch wide of hot coat on the rail lap. When dry sansd level and lay up the deck. I use 60 grit for this.
Lay up 4 oz cloth on deck and cut to bottom of rail. Lay 6oz cloth on and trim with about 2inch hanging below rail line.
Wet out as above.
If you are going to do a tint you will need to tape of rail on both sides and cut the cloth when it’s just gone hard to your tape line.
However, I’d glass your first board clear and spray colour on top of the hot coat once sanded as it’s far easier to laminate a clear board to start with.
If you do go for stint you shouldn’t use any more than 2percent of tint to resin as it will make it weak.
Do plenty of searching in the archives and on YouTube before each stage in the process…and good luck!
