Sorry if this was posted before, quick question. If I can see the checkerboard after sanding, do I have to recoat with resin? Will it stay waterproof? Is there some other type of gloss/sealant I could spray ontop? Thanks.
hello, this answer might depend on which stage of glassing your on…
In general though it is not always the best idea to sand into the weave, but after the laminating coat you want to sand it until the weave is visible… then you apply a hot coat (layer of resin + wax) over the whole board evenly. Wait until hardens- the wax will rise to the top-- you then sand this waxy layer off the board and your left with a sand-finished surfboard which should be water tight… its up to you if you would like to gloss over again to make it shiny instead of dull with the sand-finish.
Hope this helps
The Lam coat dosen’t need to be sanded. As a matter of fact it stays sticky so that the hot coat can adhear to it. It’s so sticky that it will gum up your sand paper.
They only thing you should be doing to the lamination is smoothing out the bumbs with a sureform. Use a sureform with a new sharp blade. Cutting the cloth is better than sanding it down, Sanding will show matted cloth weave under the hotcoat.
If you snd through the hotcoat it’s ok to hit the weave, just don’t burn through it into the next layer, or don’t hit it so had that it makes a soft delam spot.
You will need to seal the board no matter what, either clear laquer, or gloss resin or whatever. This will make sure no water wicks through the exposed cloth, or through a little gopherhole pinhole
