Sanding resin issues

Aloha Sway's ,

So,  my good friend came back from Hawaii after working there at my other friend's ding

repair shop and asked me where he could get good sanding resin in Israel.

I told him I get it from one of the big surboard manufatorers and that it "feels" and performs

like the resin he used in Hawaii .. and I should know cause I've been there too and worked with the same stufff he got used to.

I gave him some of what I got and he liked it.   a few days later he finished the bottle I  gave him and we went to a one of the biggest chimicals and fiberglass

suppliers we got here to buy some stuff.   he asked them if by any chance they have a good poly resin for our needs and they said they

got two buckets of crystal clear poly resin that costs half the price of what I get from the surfboard manufactorer.

their price was about 5$ for a quart ( litre) .

they say it already has S.A in it and it should cure    like the sanding resin we're used to.

we did a test that proved THEY WERE WRONG!

so I poured 1.5 litre of the stuff to a bottle , added about 0.75% wax in styrene and about 2% UV catalyst and did another test.

it cured perfectly good and we we're very satisfied from the results.

BUT ... after a few batches the resin started to cure STICKY like it was originally.

when I mix the resin with the additives I always warm it a bit to make sure I get a uniform mixture.

I shake it well for a few minutes .

now I wonder what makes the difference between "home made" sanding resin and pre mixed one as we never

get poor results from the "original"  sanding resin we buy.

what's the trick for a good mix up?

thanks

Lee

Not sure what issues you’re having, but I like to add SA until I see the wax in the resin when I mix it up. Of course it can be done, but it’s hard to get too much SA in the resin.

i use 3 oz of wax solution per gallon of resin.  i also strain the wax soluion before i add to lam resin

what I'm trying to understand is why the resin I mix by myself is fickle .  at the beggining it cures good

but after a while when it sits in the bottle it cures sticky .

I even shake it again before I  use it just to make sure the S.A is spread evenly.

it never happens with the factory pre-mixed resins.  always good results..

I guess it's all about how good and uniform the mixture is .

but what's the secret to hold the S.A in the resin  uniformly for a long while?

You might have a bad batch of sa solution.  Ive never had a problem with me pre mixing my gallon for sanding resin.  I always give it a good shake, and hotcoat away.-josh
